Should I push for a diagnosis?

I have been waiting for 6 months to try life without attenelol to control my tacchycardia that started after a PE in Sept.-Oct. 2007. I also waited until a month after my partial thyroidectomy- I do not have cancer, but an autoimmune disease called Hashimoto's thyroiditis. After 4 days without it, I couldn't take it anymore -the dizziness, the palpitations was all coming back. My resting HR is higher without it, and going from lying flat to standing makes my HR go up 30-60 BPM. From what I have read, I fit the description for POTS- postural orthostatic tacchycardic syndrome. The test needed to diagnose it is called a tilt table test. My pcp says that "the system" prevents him from ordoring the test himself- that I would have to do a 30 day event monitor, then they would put me on the same medication I am on now. Why can't they just diagnose the problem? I have had some very important dignosis missed (shattered fibula fracture, PE) -I don't want to miss something, and lose my life to pay for someone elses mistake -I have 3 kids and a husband to raise! What should I do?

" Do you have a cardiologist or Electorphysiologist? My EP ordered and did my tilt table. The dx for that test was POTS. I have been o.k now that I am on cardizem, dig and have the pacemaker (that I never use). HR still tachy most of the time but being in pain all the time doesn't help. If you can avoid the PCP and see a specialist who can then order the test and make the dx. Don't understand why he can't order it anyway. "

" See a cardiologist and have the tilt table test. That will give you ans to your question. If your insurance denies it make your appt and pay for it yourself. Most MD offices will let you make payments. No interest either. Your heart has to come first because it it is not working right you will not be around to worry about your ins co "

" My doctor finally agreed that the tacchycardia I have does not fit with the "subclinical hypothyroidism, so he is sending me to an electrophysiologist -hopefully they will be willing and able to diagnose the problem. "

" please check into POTS SYNDROME, and a good heart specialist. also a autonomic specialist if possible. A tilt can pick up your problem at times and sometimes not. its a catch 22. Pots is a second to minute to hour problem it varies....you need to monitor your heart and blood pressure. "

" Why not go for the gold standard and have a cardiac cath done? My cardio said it was time to know whether I did or did not have problem and advised me to show up at the ER and tell them I have chest pains and he would pick it up from there and do the CC. After a lifetime of physical limitations due to my heart, I got a diagnosis and am ready to pursue my options. I wonder if you would benefit going this same route....... My insurance wouldn't ok a thallium stress test so my dr. advised me to deal with them in this manner! "
