I so want my mother to recover from her near fatal bleeding stroke in Dec 08. It is uncertain just how much she understands and she cannnot follow the simplest of instructions. IE> Look out the window? She is fortunate to have recovered from any physical limitation although her right side is weak. To me, it is like windows of clarity open and shut daily, sometimes hourly. Just when I think she has understood, blam, the window shuts and its clear that she did not. It was a level 4 annie and she underwent 4 major brain surgerys including removal and replacement of a large piece of her skull just last month. It really hasnt been that long in the grand scheme of things but when will her words/understanding come back? Id like to know about anyone elses experience with this type of stroke and launguage/comprehension type aphasia. I just want my mom back. thanks SaraJilly

SaraJilly, I can help you a little. I also have aphasiac type episodes. I can only tell you my point of view but maybe it will help you to understand things from the other side. I have no apparent brain disordera nd have not yet been diagnosed so I don't know how we differ and are the same. For what it is worth, I myself am still in there when I have episodes just slower and processing is delayed. I can tell u that it is scary and she just needs you to be there for her and listen even if you don't get what she is saying. Provide her with as many useful tools as possible as this will relieve some of the frustration she feels. When I am at my worst I call it surfing thru it when others try to make out what i mean. Encouraging her to speak slowly also helps. She will automatically want to babble fast as she has alot to say and no way to tell you causing anxiety to take over. I am in speech therapy and find that is helping me. I hope she has a good therapist. Feel free to write to me and I will try to help you understand if I can. Deb
