I know that stress increases having issues with Aphasia..
I'm getting prepared for an extremely stressful conference /court event and don't know what more to say to these people than... ALL the things I do otherwise, the point never seems to be conveyed. If too much information is given, I shut down, get more delayed, answer inappropriately... it may take HOURS or days to figure it out after I have had a chance to "process" the information... then later say "why did I answer like that? That is what I should have brought up and didn't or I knew the answer and it wasn't that one..." I don't know enough at the time to say... "I don't know, when in fact I think I do know." My instant memory recall on the fly is a zero to three on a scale of 1 - 10 with 10 being best. I have done all of the speech strategies, notes, outlines, tried to come up with all scenarios, gathered documents to help... but in the end, it's going to be the same... How do I get across to them that I do know what I'm talking about when I have such delays or need to go back and correct it once something else has been said and have to correct it or with delayed recall problems. My comprehension levels deteriorates with time, (conference setting) after a while I won't comprehend sentences or even know what was said, I'll be blanking out, not even knowing how to respond... I will get the jist of what is said, to be able to comprehend a simple question, but not be able to retrieve or answer anything in detail without each little prompt... As a for instance if someone says... If North is to South, then what is East to ____, or Which direction is North from here... Of course I know, but because it requires figuring it out, I am delayed by up to 5 seconds, until I repeat that (or something similar) in my head 1 - 2 times-or more, to figure out what is being asked, to be able to even respond with this one word answer, let alone a full explanation with details and instances about a random question. Any suggestions to get me through this??? I feel like I'm as prepared as I can be but know that I'll be flat on my face within 10 minutes out of 3 hours of questioning. Posted on 03/26/08, 10:03 am |

i realize this post was from some time ago... how did it go? are you by any chance taking any meds for stress? i think its such a shame that neurological changes are so incredibly and understandably stressful to deal with, and yet there are SO MANY people dealing with them without any kind of help (be it counseling, antianxiety meds or both).
meds or not, i would think in your situation that the court would have a legal obligation to make adjustments for you, since aphasia is a disability. having your testimony in a quiet room with fewer people and more time to express yourself? i'd have a speech therapist write a letter to the appropriate party explaining your situation and what you would need to help you to be more successful with testimony. just my 2 cents.
