Have you seen a Speech-Language Pathologist? If not, then I suggest you get evaluated.

I have it and can tell you a bit about what I know. Hard time right now to go into it, but I will put watch on this thread and try to get back to it ASAP. I am TBI but aphonia can also be caused by severe emotional trauma of one kind or another; connections can "shut down" due to the trauma. See a neuropsychologist. They can help a lot.

p.s. since aphonia is difficulty speaking due to difficulty producing voice, you may have more luck finding others in a voice disorders forum (if you havent already tried that). also, it can be called aphonia or dysphonia if that helps your search.

nothing happened in august 2006.
my speech went withen the space of five minutes. i did see an ent doctor, he stuck a camera up my nose that went into my throat and into my throat. he found no problems. i've tried searching all over to find out more about my condition, and anyone else who might suffer from it. this website had the nearest to my condition that i could find. and the support from it has been great.

See a neurologist that specializes in Autonomic issues, they focus on the Autonomic Nervous System. It will be difficult to find one that specializes in this but it will be worth your time and weight in gold.

typically vocal cord dysfunction is a result of either structural or neurological changes or ineffective behavioral patterns. a neurologist would be able to tell you if you had any indications of a neurological event (even if the only change you experienced was related to your voice)... an ent should be able to tell you if there are any signs of structural abnormalities relating to your vocal cords. they should also be able to see if you have full range of movement of your vocal cords. if an ent views these parameters and says there are no indications of a structural or neurological abnormality, a speech therapist should be able to help you regain control over your voice. not all speech therapists specialize in voice. you should try to find a voice clinic in your area.
