OK long story short

My son is 10 and was dx with ADD 4 years ago
School is still a struggle but we have settled on 54mg of Concerta once a day

Two weeks ago he went in for his 4 month check up and the dr he saw (a new one that had never seen him before) said that with his anixety levels we may want to try something in addition to the concerta to level him out

I said ok we can try it (basking in the thought I may not have to look where I sit out of fear of sitting on him)

for the next week he took 25mg of Zoloft, i learned that he could smile it was nice

now heres the problem after the first week he wanted him to go to 50mg

my son is 5'0 and weighs 84lbs but i said we would try it

He has forgotten his homework everyday this week

Day before yesterday he decided to paint my brick fence white ....Not like him I chaulked it up to him being 10

Tonight he decided to play with matches in his bathroom sink Again not normal behavior

My first instinct is to drop him back to the 25 because the 50 maybe to strong

He has stated he doesnt feel like his brain is working right since he has started taking to 50mg

he has always given a problem taking meds and he hates school

but geez spray painting my fence and playing with matches in the house

Please help and thanks in advance for your time

" I'm no Dr. but my daughter takes zoloft for anxiety and we have made adjustments several times. She was taken up to 75ml for a short time and she was alot worse after raising it, so we had to take her back down to 50ml again. The Dr. told me sometimes too much can make things worse. I'm sure you already have or plan to, but definately talk to your Dr. about this. Sounds like you need to go back to 25ml. "

" Zoloft can cause an increase of impulsivity whith the ADHD Drugs. My son 10 is on both Concerta 36mg and Zoloft 50mg. So far it is working for him and we have a psychologist for him as well "

" Every human body reacts differently. My son did well on zoloft and also wellbutrin, but not everyone does. Go with your gut, if he is doing unusual things, that is a symptom, and may be a cry for help. Phone the Dr., don't wait. Pay close attention to his eating, sleeping habits. "

" It has nothing to do with height and weight it is symptom control and I would also pull back to 25 mg a day. We tried 50 with 27mg concerta not good but when we raised the Concerta (a ratio thing) things got better. "

" I'm afraid that I can't offer much help in this area, being an anxiety "sufferer" myself with symptoms of depression, I can't help much with the ADHD side of things. One of the main things about psychological medicine is that it affects the chemical balance of the brain. It does, however, seem very unlikely from your story that your son if having a chemical inbalance crisis.
I myself am rising above my anxiety, slowly but but surely. One thing that is certainly very striking is how strange I feel when I notice a change in myself.
Your son is probably experiencing change, and is struggling to get used to it at first. By playing with matches, he may be exploring his new-fangled experimental interests that may have been blocked before by anxiety.
I hope what I've written helps in some way, and I also hope that things are better in the not too distant future for you and your son.
All the best,
Tom. "

" Hi,
Just curious if dyslexia has been thought of or ruled out yet for your child. I picked up on the hating school part, and I have lots of knowledge on this. My son actually got worse on his meds, all but one. Most dyslexic kids are diagnosed with ADD or ADHD. People medicate to help with attention, but don't deal with teaching them properly. If you want more information about dyslexia in case it is a possibility, you can go to http://brightsolutions.us "

" My 10 year old is also on Concerts 36mg and 50mg Zoloft. The Zoloft can definatly make the impulsivity worse. Things were better when on 25mg but not enough for his anxiety. So we are just working with him and hoping this will be the end of dose hikes for the Zoloft. I have heard alot of people are using Tenex to help with the anxiety thus lowering the Zoloft dose but our doc will not go there. We are very strict and very structured and this seems to help somewhat.Good Luck! " Don't forget when any new med is added/adjusted, you have to give it 2-3 weeks for the body to adjust. "

" Is anyone scared in regards to the meds. I am taking my son to the therapist this weekend and I am afraid they are going to say he needs antidepressants. if you give your child antidepressants do they get worse if you take them off of them if you don't like them? My son is on concerta and is experiencing anxiety and a little depression but I am afraid to give him anything elso that is going to affect his brain. "
