" My son has selective mutism. He has not talked to a teacher EVER and he is in 3rd grade. He only talks to the family in the home. He can't explain why he does not want to talk. And I can't give anyone answers for it. It is an anxiety he has. For some reason he fears talking to peers and teachers and even my mother in law and sister in law. Other than that he is a very happy boy. "

" I knew when my daughter was diagnosed with IBS two years ago. Her stomach aches would cause her from doing the things she loves, playing with her friends, cheerleading, sleepovers. I took her to therapy so she could learn to cope. Didn't work. Now she has full blown panic attacks. She is on med's now for four weeks. "

" I suffer from anxiety and my son shows the same symptoms. He is very tearful when stressed and clingy. He needs reassurance constantly and calls himself bad names. He doesn't seem to have much confidence. "

" My son has just turned 12. Seven months ago he started worring alot about his safety around him. Small things he would do would catch my attention. He would check all the windows and doors in the house before bed, three or four times. He would hide his eyes on scary commercials, he would get mad at his older brother for watch a show called Future Weapons. It didnt dawn on me why that upset him but it was because they talked about the future and war. He would seem fine all day until it was bed time, he would start to cry, sometimes cry himself to sleep. No matter what I said it didnt help. He thinks of things that could happen to me and his dad, the world ending, atomic bombs, someone kidnapping him. All the stuff he would see on the news, he would be affaid it would happen to his family. Thats when I took him to the see a phychiatrist and she told me he suffers with anxiety. He has been doing fine up until school let out for summer. Now he has to much time on his hands and all he does is think about bad things. He plays sports and does other activities, but we moved to a new house last week and he has been a wreck. His dad has Fort Knoxed the place for him so that we can show him that he is safe in our new home, but every night, he gets upset. It has been and is very hard to deal with. I feel so badly that my words are not helping him. "

" My 7 yr. old son has selective mutism. He will not speak publicly. I also have always been prone to anxiety and shyness. When he was small, I did notice his shyness to outsiders was more severe than most. He will only talk and act normally around the immediate family. Schoolmates, teachers, aunts, uncles, cousins, he won't speak to them and will hang back and not join in the fun going on around him. He suffers from headaches, stomachaches when he is attending school. He was at first being punished in school for not responding. He does his written work perfectly, just anything that involves speaking he won't do. After the diagnosis, the school has been more helpful and tolerant. I would have to say his symptoms were severe shyness, not ever wanting to be alone in a room, separation anxiety, stomach aches and headaches. Extended crying also. "
