the problem is, i become more and more tolerant to it, so i need more and more for it to work. this is probably common knowledge to most of you, but none of my psychiatrists have come up with a suitable solution. every time my dosage gets raised, i become accustomed to it and it doesn't affect me anymore. i try to go off it but i really can't do anything without it, i feel sick and can't think straight. none of the other anxiety drugs have ever worked for me either. has anyone figured out how to use xanax in a way that keeps it at maximum effectiveness?

" To be honest, Im not sure. Im on xanex as well. I started with the lowest dose Im on 0.25 twice a day (iF NEEDED0 i try to limit it to once a day but most of the time I need it the 2 times. I feel as if I may be becomming a bit immune as well..after a while its not as effective. It sucks. I don't really know what to do about that. Are you on any anti-depressents. I'm on prozac..I just started tho...they're supposed to relieve anxiety as well so maybe you wont need as much xanex if u went on one? I'm not sure though youd have to talk to a specialist, they know best! "

" I don't have a definite suggestion other than to speak to your doctor and I think Violet is on to something when she recommended an antidepressant....or some other medication that may work in conjunction with the xanax to help with anxiety, and of course the doctor will know best, hope things improve "

" Well I can DEFINITELY relate!!!!! I'm not on xanax, I'm on klonopin. Same thing really bc they are both benzodiazapines and work in the same way. I've taken xanax before and it feels the same as klonopin.

I am going through the same exact thing!!!!! I am so struggling with it too!!!!! They took me up to 2mgs of it in the morning and 2 more at night. Now I've moved and they wanna take me off the klonopin and just have me on lexapro. Well, I havent been able to reduce my klonopin except by one mg. I'm supposed to have reduced it by 2. I just get so panicky!!!!!!!!!!!! Its so hard!!!!!!!! I know exactly how you feel and I'm afraid of ended up in some rehab someday from having to take more and more. I'm really trying to reduce it but feel like I cant. Its so hard!!!!!!!!!

You are not alone by far!!!!!! Message me anytime!

Peace "

" I think some people are so lucky that they dont ever seem to build up a tolerance to some meds! Boy I wish that was me! I bet you do too dont ya Spiky?

Its so hard when that tolerance builds and you need more! Its dangerous too! Dependence and addiction are not the same thing but they both suck when trying to come off something like a benzo!

I'm praying that I will be able to wean but I know first I have to feel better! I mean, my panic attacks are soooo bad that I CANT get through them without the klonopin! I know this bc I have tried and ended up in the ER and what did they do, give me klonopin. I need a slower way of coming off! I think an entire mg at a time is too fast! "

" I think you are supposed to come off something like 1/4 mg. per 2 weeks. Really really slowly so that your brain has time to readjust. Xanax and other benzo's act by slowing down the reaction of the sympathetic nervous response. The reason it take more to work is because your brain adjusts to the benzo so it makes less of its own calming chemical called "GABA". When you go off you need to give your brain a chance to produce more GABA to compensate. I am not a doctor but in a nutshell that is why it takes time and a very slow pace to come off. Also, I you can take an ssri (I can't) that may help. "

" I wonder if Xanax could be taken in rotation with something else, so between the two medications you would almost always feel ok. "

" I'd say use cognitive behavior therapy on a regular basis and only rely on xanax in extreme situations where a bad attack comes and you can't calm down. I take klonopin 1mg nightly for sleep, and on a seldom attack that comes on suddenly I will take the other 1 mg. I'm prescribed a 2mg. Hope this helps. "
