I feel like with a lot of the hectic crap that has happend in my life I feel like I am in a state of protect and defend type mode. I donno how many other people like they feel like they are constantly on gaurd? Your muscles are tight and tense, your worried and anxious, looking around, fidgeting, and waiting for something to happen.
Sometimes I don't even realize that my shoulders are up to my chin because I am hunching them. I hunch forward slightly to protect my stomach, and I just feel so helpless and like I can't really defend myself. You never even know why your so afraid sometimes, but your adrenal glands continue to pump stuff out like its life or death. I start worrying about health issues that might come into play eventually because of how stressed out I can sometimes be. I try not to be a hypochondriac, but I worry about my heart. I have read a lot of books in relation to anxiety, and how no one has ever died from a panic attack, but you can't tell me that my stress isn't doing at least something because the percentage of illness's that are stress related are just too high. Its not as bad as it used to be, I don't have panic attacks anymore. I used to have them everyday and basically live on a anxiety attack as my baseline. I tried to sleep all I could because I didn't want to be awake and feel it. I also used to have terrible nightmares, and would be constantly getting attacked in them. It made me afraid to sleep at night a lot of the time. Now, I don't really have nightmares as much anymore. I just wonder if anyone feels almost soldier like sometimes, because you are trying so hard to keep yourself sane and function normally through out the day? Posted on 11/10/09, 10:11 pm |

I completely understand, you kind have all day full body nervious tension running through you. Something could happen at any minute ending your life as you know it. So you can't relax at all, I even find it hard to relax with the Xanax. It sucks to go through the day with this wired feeling, so tense all over shoulders and back the worst of it. And forget functioning properly, I have been running on auto pilot. Just remember you are not alone.

I am so with you. However, we must try to relax those shoulders..and allow control to be taken from us. Hate it. Trust me.
Have you tried breathing and other relaxation exercises? It doesn't work all of the time. But most of the time, it can bring you down from that clunched feeling. Even if only temporary. It's like we are in this automatic state of stress. In order to control, we hold on tight (so it seems). Everything clenches. You can't die from a panic attack. I am sure though that the stress over time can have some impact on your body. I know after suffering with anxiety, panic, depression for most of my life, I am now starting to show signs of high blood pressure (still attributed to anxiety)...irritable bowel at times...etc. However, we are working on getting help and learning how to handle the anxiety. It's a vicious cycle....but we will get through it. It will not kill you. Trust me, I have been in a state where my BP was so high and I wasn't sleeping...it was awful. But it passes and it hasn't killed me yet.

Its funny that you say something about bp. My bp has never been really high and latley its been quite out of wack. So that has also been adding some stress to things.

Wow, my blood pressure has been high too. I have never had a history of high blood pressure, although it does run in my family to some extent. I was actually in the ER late tues morning because it was 145 over 110. It scared the hell out of me, because I have never had that happen before. I was having heart palpitations and the Dr told me that I just need to keep monitoring it. Ever since Wed afternoon its been in the more normal range, but there has been a lot of family drama and other stresser's.
