Will I ever get back to work?

I have recently had to take a leave from my job as a teacher due to severe and sudden anxiety attacks at work. I have tried a couple of times to suck it up and face my fears, but each time I tried I had a panic attack and had to leave within an hour. It's really frustrating because I love my job and being at home in the dark weather is totally depressing. Has anyone ever experienced anything like this? Have you been able to return to work? I'm just really scared I won't be able to teach again...

Thanks for any help :)

" I am a teacher too. Im supposed to go back soon but as nothing has changed at work I don't think I can. Im not sure what I can do to get on disability. Ive been on medical leave fo stress anxiety and depression using my own sick leave but that can't go on much longer.I have a toxic kid and parent in my room who filed and abuse charge with the police and superintendent. But the kid is still in my class and Im not getting any action from my union or principal. Its making me crazy sick cant eat, sleep constantly worried and overcome with catastrophic thoughts. "

" Wow nowa, I cannot believe there is not something in place to protect you and the kid, as far as getting him out of your class. I would think that would open the school district up to a lawsuit by not trying to divide up the situation. You have the right not to be open to fear of this child and the child has the right to be with a different teacher who might be able to handle him better. Have you sought any legal counseling on this? You now have the psychological documentation to show how much it has affected you.
So sorry you are going through this, I am sure many teachers get caught up in difficult situations like this, no wonder we are short on teachers.
I will keep you in my prayers. "

" Isn't the system amazing? I too am off work from a secure youth custody center which is extremely toxic and negative! After being extremely verbally and sometimes physically attacked, they expect us to dust ourselves off and go back in and "deal with the same puke" day after day, week after week, year after year, well 14yrs was my limit I guess. The system needs to address these concerns with high burn out jobs. When we're young we have more energy and patience I guess, but there isn't many options and we end up on leave. I rushed back too soon the 1st time I was off and it was a huge mistake. It set me back about 1 year!! Now I am plugging away at my own pace. The # 1 thing here is You! and do what is best for you, no guilt, just what can u do to help u. Until you are healthy you r not very helpful to others anyway. "
