I have recently had to take a leave from my job as a teacher due to severe and sudden anxiety attacks at work. I have tried a couple of times to suck it up and face my fears, but each time I tried I had a panic attack and had to leave within an hour. It's really frustrating because I love my job and being at home in the dark weather is totally depressing. Has anyone ever experienced anything like this? Have you been able to return to work? I'm just really scared I won't be able to teach again...
Thanks for any help :) Posted on 11/10/09, 07:11 pm |

Well I lost my job from a car accident, in fact i lost any job forever. Ptsd came upon me a 3 years later. So I have had to adjust losing all my work and many social contacts.
It is hard to be home alone hurting and feeling helpless and wondering if it will ever be the same again. Well my work life ended but my life came back. You can get your life back but just thinking you can just bite the bullet and gut your way through does not work very well. You probably will not be the same person you were but you can heal and become someone you will like and b happy with. It takes daily work accepting and using mindfulness. Your fear of the inknown feeds your anxiety and it grows. When you change your relationship mwith your thoughts then you will heal. Good Luck. You have to believe you can heal and stick with it because you heal subtlely.

Yes people do get better and can get back to work. Definitely hope is there.
When you said you just suck it up and face your fears..when you think about that, your not really dealing with the issues that are causing the anxiety, when you do that. You are forcing them and pushing yourself without understanding it. And the only way to get some of those answers is through meds from your doctor or counseling. Some people have used hypnosis and other methods to understand and get well. It could be purely psychological or it could be a physical thing such as periomenopause, one the of symptoms is anxiety and thats because of a hormonal imbalance. Thyroid can also bring on crazy moods and consequent anxiety. In those cases, like the thyroid, having the medication for that would cure the anxiety.

I too, am a teacher. I had to leave work due to my severe panic/anxiety disorder. I haven't taught in 10 years, but I always have hope. I go through a lot of derealization. It's like I'm in a dream. People and things aren't real. It's very scary!! I know in time, I'll be back on the road to a full recovery. Until now, I keep myself busy to pass the time away. I do get hard on myself. I know that isn't the answer. I wish you lots of luck. So glad to meet another teacher who had to leave work!! Thank you for you discussion!!

i found that once i truly understood what was happening to me regarding a anxiety attack, it was only then i could work to change my thought pattern, i did the typical negative thinking which actually triggers an attack or will make it worse, practicing breathing exercises work brilliant aswell, positive thinking will become a habit just like the negatives become a habit. I have had anxiety and depression issues for 23 yrs now, and this is the best i have ever felt.
When you have a attack at a certain place etc your thoughts will trigger it to happen again in that same place, the thought like "i hope i dont have a panic attack" will more than likely bring one on. You can beat this in time one way or another.

Try to be open to change. You can definitely get back to being productive and doing stuff...but maybe not in the same situation. Try not to force things. That's what I think, anyway. Best Wishes!

maybe this is a time for you to find a way to make a living that is not as demanding and social.
we can't force our hearts to mend faster than they want to.

Thanks for all the replies, it's nice to know there is support out there. My doctor is trying me on new medication and it's making me feel pretty awful, so maybe it's not the best one for me. I have faith I can get back to where I was, I just need some time. Thanks again:)

Hopeful, I do not know how long you have been taking your medication but a lot of these kind of meds have a timeframe in which you might feel horrible for a while as you adjust. Definitely you need to talk to your doctor to see what he/she says. I had one, that took me 6 weeks to adjust too. After that period it went well for me. There are some that you have to slowly get adjusted and increased as well, that you cannot start at the dosage you need right off. So it can take time.

Whatever you do, don't give into the fear. Ride it out. I have suffered from anxiety all my life and on different jobs. I rode it out, and it left me. I took meds to help a couple of times. You could try that until you get into a positive pattern again. I know you will be able to teach again without anxiety.
