I have a friend whose brother has been addicted to zanax for 8 years. He drinks beer every night to the point of getting drunk. This June he started taking 200 every month at .5 mgs. He takes paxil and High blood pressure meds. Does anyone know what the repercussions are of this?

" Tho the bad effects may not show at this time, this can't be good for him over time. He's obviously not being honest with his physician. "

" The liver and the brain can get beat up by alcohol -- I had alcoholic hepatitis at 23. Xanax was in the mix, probably did not help.

When I did get honest and seek help, it was obvious I could never safely drink and any use of benzodiazapines had to be watched VERY VERY carefully. "

" Ive seen a few comments like this and I wanted to mention a great source of info on meds who you can ask but do so anomalously. That is your local pharmacist. I dated a guy, in college, that pharmolocology was his major and they really have to know their stuff. In fact, I was shocked at the huge books he had to carry around! You can even call one who is not immediately in your area. Of course, calling in the daytime is better for many because they get super busy at off work times for the populace. They can give you more time. "

" Overtime i'd hate to think of the state of his liver . It's bad enough he's drinking nightly but taking xanax on top of that ? Not good at all . The poor guy, its terribly sad to see someone self distruct like that . He's on a slippery road . Also the amount of brain cell's that are being killed off . He may well go on living normal for a while until bang it's too lake to go back or he might be lucky and escape, my mum is in a nursing home for life due to alcohol and she was only 50 when the liver disease emerged and my brother wasn't so lucky either an has brain damage from alcohol abuse . He's only 34yrs old Also medication doesn't work properly when mixed with drink so that's why i'd say he take's more . How is he getting his hands on that much xanax? If the doctor is giving him that much then he should be reported. "

" Thats what I would like to know, How is he getting that much? I used to do the same thing, until I walked into AA. I hit bottom and got sober. I used alcohol to self medicate, and it never is enough. Then along with meds, comes abuse. Sounds like he needs to detox asap! because he will hit bottom, and it's just a matter of time before his body gives up. "

" I am that friend of Wendylou40. And it is my brother that she is talking about. And i just need too clarify the story as screwed up the story. Up until this past June my brother who is 37 was taking 200 Xanax (.5mg) a month (enough Xanax too reach 4mg a day). And that amount goes back several years. And does drink beer every night. And i have done some research online and the reason people who take Xanax drink beer or drink grape juice on top of Xanax is too enhance the drug effect. And for those of you who asked who was giving him that much Xanax it is his DR! And yes we believe that he is lieing too his Dr too keep the refills coming. And how his dr keeps on refilling his Xanax wihtout maybe thinking that his patient is addicted too it is just mind boggling. And the only change his Dr has made too his Xanax is that he has tapered down from 200 a month too 102 Xanax a month at 1mg a tablet. And he takes 4 a day too reach 4mg. And if you are wondering if we done anything the answer is yes. We tried twice too get him into treatment twice and he walking out of both places. You try too bring up his Xanax problem and he gets very defensive. If you did a search on Xanax Addiction he fits all symtoms.

If you have questions or comments feel free too ask. "

" I need too write a retraction. Wendylou40 DID NOT screw up the story. I Tommy68 SCREWED IT UP. The Xanax is true, so is the alcohol, and the HP meds. I just explained it too Wendylou40 wrong. So i would like too apologize too my friend Wendylou40 for the SCREW UP on my part. I asked my friend Wendylou40 write this story for me as she is able too keep things short and too the point as i have a habit of writing things that should short and sweet and make them into a novel as you can see below with my story. "

" Sounds like you family are doing everything you can do. Intervention, treatment.

You can lead a horse to water but you cannot make him drink!!!

How sad for all of you to see his life this way. You can always go to like family support for those who are addicted. They might have some ideas or tools or simply give you the strength you need. "
