SSRIs for anxiety?

Hiya,
I know there have been med threads already but I'm wondering if anyone else takes an SSRI only (i.e. nothing sedating during the day) for their anxiety & finds it effective? I've been on Zoloft (50mg) for the last 6 months for anxiety, I was a bit of an emotional mess when I started and I'm calmer now, so it seems to take the edge off anxiety but I take such a small dose (50mg) that I can't help wondering if it's just a placebo effect? I sometimes take Valium to sleep but not during the day. So I guess I'm just keen to know if anyone else takes Zoloft or another SSRI on it's own for anxiety, & how it's working out for you ? :) Posted on 11/08/09, 08:11 am |

I took Effexor for about a year for my anxiety, and it was miraculous for me. Originally they prescribed xanax and i couldn't take it, it made me a zombie. i was taken off the effexor after about a year because i was doing so well, but i would not hesitate to go back on it if i needed it. Best of luck, things will get better!

I havn't taken an ssri yet, am currently on Klonopin. If I were to take an SSRI for anxiety which one has the best rep for such anxiety, with the least amount of side effects? I really wish Wellbutrin worked for anxiety.

I take 100 mg of Luvox, three times a day.
It was like someone flipped a switch when it began to work. Ya just never know with these meds -- some people get relief right away, some move from medication to medication until they find the right one.

Its not classified as a SSRI,a SNRI I think. I take Mirtazapine(Avanza) You call it (Remeron) in the States. It seems to decrease the negative effects anxiety was having on my system ( Muscle tension in the neck, pressure on the head ,night sweats, insomnia etc).
It has a sedative effect at night and a slight tired feeling in the morning, plus vivid dreams which make you feel like you haven't rested properly. apart from that it is OK.Iam on 30mg which is a fairly low dose,I tried 45mg for 2 days at the request of my GP but found it too sedative the next day,so went back to 30 mg.i would like to get off it completely but am not quite ready yet.

Thanks for replying guys, very helpful info.
GP said maybe I should up my Zoloft dose & that this would be better (in terms of potential Valium addiction I suppose) than taking Valium once or twice a week for sleeping or acute stressful times ... I don't really want to take more Zoloft every day long term if I'm functioning fine 98% of the time though. Thanks guys

I have never actually posted a "thread" before but I'm kind of nervous and figured this might be a good place to some answers. I am a 41 year old, healthy female - worrier by nature - even though I appear to have it all together. About a year ago, my husband lost his job and our life has been incredible stressful since then. I have notices some weird things popping up over the past few months and when I look them up online, the all point to anxiety. (lump in my throat, dry mouth, numbness on one side of the face - that one started Friday!) These symptoms are not constant and I do notice they seem to magnify when I'm worried. Has anyone experienced any of these? I have a doctors appointment in the morning - I'm pretty confident from what I've read from others that she will point to "anxiety" as the diagnosis and "meds" as the answer. Thoughts???

Hey jklhale
Sounds like anxiety to me, I haven't experienced specifically what you have but similar stuff (like tingly zaps on one side of the head) ... good to get that stuff checked out by a doc though to make sure it's nothing physical. Hope your doc suggests counselling - it sounds like your life is really stressful and chaotic at the moment so counselling might help you more than just taking meds ...
