Hi

I am struggling hugely with anxiety and think I need medication as all the self help stuff is having little effect.

I do not want to go on anti-depressants because I am not depressed but diazepem seems to be highly addictive. Any ideas of over the counter stuff to nock edge off it and help me to function in job and family etc would be appreciated.

Regards

Libby

" Some people use Valerian Root, but you have to make sure it doesn't interfere with any meds you are on. Also, try drinking decaf Chamomille Tea in the evening. Good luck. I have to take meds. "

" 5-HTP and L-Theanine are off the shelf supplements. 5HTP increases serotonin levels in the brain as it is a direct precursor to seserotonin. L-Theanine helps with GABA.

However they seem not to work as well as the meds. Although Diazepam is addictive it used appropriately it would provide significant relief to the point where you could function. I use Xanax when needed and have not had trouble with addiction. It helps me think clearly and calms me. I have tried the antidepressants, yet they caused me worse Panic than I had. I tried Lexapro and I thought I was going to be hospitalized. I tried Prozac and it made me cry for about 3 days straigh. My psych gave me a perscription for Paxil and I am scared to try it. Plus I heard the withdrawal is terrible.

I hope you find some relief soon. "

" I am taking Lorazepam for the anxiety (1/2 a 5 mg). That dose takes the edge off enough that my breathing and heart rate settles; my mind also slows down some, but not so much that I can't function. I only take it when I need it; hope that helps.
Also, I find that doing Yoga (which focuses on breathing) helps me alot. Days that I start out with Yoga seem to be less anxious days for me. "

QFT.

Be careful with the benzos. They can have serious side effects, like possibly causing intelligence damage, circa http://healthlifeandstuff.com/2009... "
