Hi. If anyone has any advice for me i'd love to hear anything. Im 32 years old and have anxiety/panic condition. Ive been at the same job for 10yrs and lately ive been sinking in debt. They are on a raise freeze and i work really hard where im at.... so because of the debt ive been doing interviews in the same kind of work (restaurant management) ive been offered more than double what i make where im at... im just so scared of losing the happiness i have. The people i work with are like my other family now. I love going to work and i look forward to each new day.... this is so hard to find... do i want to lose that???... the places ive managed in the past i was so miserable at... they made my anxiety worse.. so much worse and i hated my life....
should i stay where i am and struggle financially and be happy or choose financial security and hope that i like another job half as much? Im so torn and depressed and terrified over this... up all night thinking and panic filled with so much fear even the xanax dont touch this....:( Thanks to everyone for listening! Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Crystal Posted on 10/26/09, 02:10 pm |

If it were me...I would take the job. I mean, really, "more than double" what you make now?
Your co-workers, no matter how much they love you, cannot blame you for making that call. You will get rid of a lot of stress when you have money to pay off your debts, and it is not like you will not see your friends at your old job ever again. You can always go visit and hang out and catch up. I would also do it for the challenge. A whole bunch of new people to meet, new things to try, it all sounds exciting! I know what you mean when you say you are afraid that the next job will be worse than the one you are in now. But it such a terrific opportunity! I may be biased because a new job in my same field that pays twice as much sounds like a dream come true right now...but I'm not you. Is there any way you can spend a few days in the new restaurant, just to get a feel for it, and then decide? What was it about your old jobs that made you so miserable? Maybe if you figure that out, you can avoid it or fix it in this new job before is becomes a problem. Good Luck! Owl

I myself, find that money doesnt buy happiness. To have a job you love, and enjoy the people you work with, thats hard to beat. Have you thought of talking to your current boss to see if he/she could give you a raise to keep you? you might mention you have been offered another position and are seriously considering it becuase of the pay raise, and finances is an issue for you?
It doesnt hurt to let your boss know you are wanted by others and therefore you are a valuble employee and part of the present group you work with. Otherwise people here have given you excellent advice as well, new opportunity to grow, new challenges, more money makes it easier to manage..however changing your spending habits is also a good challenge. Maybe you should write out a pro and con sheet of both possibilities? another thought is, is there room for advancing? is there room for learning more so to keep your interest? Often sme people start to feel stagnant if they do not have some challenge, though your business always has challenge as it is people oriented. There are no guarentees as far as what kind of people you will be with in a new workplace. However with anxiety you want to make it better for you. Can you work and be around the other business for a day or two to feel it out? Thats another idea. good luck to you..and hurah for your hard work!!! Thats exciting.

Personally i would pick more money . You would have more money to clear your debts which let me tell ya is so stressful having that around your neck and also have money to socialise with your old work buddies when your gone . Also maybe talk to someone who works in the restaurent your thinking of going to and see if they like it and are happy . Get a feel for it . Even have a meal there and watch wats going on . If it feels good then you can make your mind up . I used to work in the food ind and have never met a nicer bunch of people . I used to have a laugh in all the places i worked in . Don't make any rash decision, think it through or even ask friends for advice who know you best . Whatever you decide i'm sure will be right for you . Keep us posted will you ?

You are one of the blessed these days. You have a job. And as others have said since the dawn of time, "money doesn't but happiness", but it buys another week at the beach. Follow your heart and do what's best for you.

the fact that you have been looking for another job tells me you have already made your mind up really, you probably feel safe where you work now 10yrs is a long time, you may just like the new work place anyway there is no point in staying where you are just to be in debt it dont make sence as this will pobably make your anxiety worse, good luck x

Thank you all so much, i have decided to stay where i am. They are giving me a raise though still not near as much as id be making.. i love it too much to quit and would rather struggle a bit financially and be totally happy than be miserable and have money. I know im wierd but ive made my decision and i think each and every one of you for the great advice!!

Good for you!!! I know that iffy feeling of what to do can be a pain. Im happy for you.
There will always be more opportunities and it sounds like you have the excellent qualities for those to develop. I have gone on to new jobs and found the atmosphere really diffent and not been as happy, and then thought out, well money really isnt everything. Course Ive had jobs that work great too, you just never know what life has in store.
