I get times in my life (like now) where all I can think about is bad stuff happening. It just builds and builds on itself until it is a huge mountain.
My boss sends me a rather snotty email - my mind plays it over and over again until I am going to get fired. The divorce is going to turn ugly and i am going to lose everything. just on and on. it build and builds. Problem is i start acting like that stuff is true. it effects my job, my kids, everything. Am I alone? Does this happen to others - how do you battle it? What can I do.... Posted on 10/22/09, 11:10 pm |

I do the same thing, everyday. Im slowly trying to change my thinking patterns to stop that but easier said then done =/.

Thanks everyone. Don I will get that book next week when i get paid and check it out. Any helpful hints out of that book in the mean time?
All day today I have this little uneasyness going in my stomach. Right in the core of mmy body, like my guts and heart seem to be fixated on me loosing my job. Now I am in sales so it is a bit like every month you are on the chopping block especially in these times but my company really doesnt do like that. They are pretty fair. Of course the pressure is up even higher now. But the last 3 months I have been over 100% of goal and for the year I am now running around 90% of goal. I am proabably in the top 1/3rd of the sales people. But why does my body do this to me it makes it hard for me to think or get energetic about my job which makes me do worse. Which could lead to me loosing my job - almost like a self fullfilling prophacy. If anyone has any ideas on how I can break this nervous feeling and these thought patterns please share.

You don.t own tomorrow you own today. So stop think about what if what if. Just live your life, you said your worrying about your job and if you make your sales. You always do good so why worry, tell your self you are the best sales person and every one is trying to sell like you. You are the best and never forget it. If your boss is sending you e mails you don't like tell him. Do it nice and tell him it bothers you. If something bothers you deal with it and put it in the past and move on.

The "Anxiety & Phobia Workbook" by Edmund Bourne has been a great resource for me. There is a chapter on negative self talk and how to re-train your brain to not think so negatively all the time. It's a great work book over all and I've found it very helpful in dealing with my anxiety. I hope it helps!

HI..I do this when things are not going so well for me. I think it's called catastrophizing....thinking the worst possible scenario about ever situtaion you face. Don't feel alone in this....this too shall pass.

you are definitely not alone as you can read what others are saying. I feel like I spiral downward into that worry mode and when you do that its like you cant crawl back upward and out. The sily thing is often your worryis over things you have no control over. I get to the point of worrying about people in Africa and how they are feeding their families lol yep global worrier here.
On the few things you have mentioned.first know that emails can often be interpeted incorrectly as they have no voice tone or face to face interaction. I know emails often bothered me and often...it was totally unfounded. If you could try and think these things out perhaps you can lay them to rest a bit. Thats what anxiety is you lose your reality of what is really going on. your worry is not reality. Easy to say but not easy to think. So like anything that is overwhelming you need to whittle it down to peices when you try to deal with it. But first..and foremost like several of the comments you need to get away from that constant head space by finding new directions to engage your mind...or distract your mind so you can reengage while at work. LIke get up, take a walk, run an errand, try and make a game of counting something as you go to your destination, like how many people are wearing a color, how many people have earings on...anything that may take your head space to somewheres else. To get physical works well for many people. I know washing my hands, using water, is very soothing to me. I dot know why, it just is. it isnt the washing its the water. Find something that works for you. this is just for the now. Counseling can help you more in this direction as well as medication.These will help you to understand it and know you are not insane. lol. Plus give you tools. But to be honest I have found the best advice Ive gotten is from others who have gone through it. I think it really is an individual thing, as far as what helps snap you out of it. Also, perhaps for you, positive affirmations would be agood thing as well. Being negative often produces negative things to happen. So you can work on how can I make what I am saying right now positive. I am going to lose everytihng in the divorce. how can you change that to a positive. how bout, I have been an equal partner in this marriage and i am going to get half and be just fine! Or I have beautiful kids and am so blessed!!! Thats the best thing ever from this marriage. I am not doing a great job here but you get the idea. most states are equal on divison..so you can placate yourself with that...I will get half from the divorce...I will have plenty to pay my bills.
