breathing problems and my monthly cycle?

HI everyone! Here is what has been happening and I am starting to see a pattern and need to know if I sound like I could be right.
I get breathing problems that come on and last for about 1 - 2 weeks approx. I cant get rid of it no matter what I do some days worse then others. I am not wheezing or coughing like crazy I just breath and feel like there is a straw in my lungs or cotton balls and it is very scary.
6month or more ago I had a ling xray and spirometer test but it wasnt nessecarily happening at the time but all was clear.
Here is what i have noticed the last 2 months. It usually starts about 1 week or more prior to my menstrual cycle and lasts pretty much through it and a few days after then I go for another couple weeks and I feel fine. LAst month and this month the breathing thing started pretty much the same time and of course 1 week or so later I got my period. I am having the issue now and I am freaked out. I dont see how my period can cause this but why is it happening like this? The breathing thing is not that I cant take a full breath it just feels clogged in my lungs or like I mentioned I am breathing through a straw. I dont understand this and it is so uncomfterble all the time until it passes. I dont eat well or sleep well because How can I when I cant breath for 2 weeks?
ANyway thank you for listening..

" hi. i have had anxiety for almost 17 years..and it began after i stopped breastfeeding my son...someone suggested, about three months ago, that i see a hormone doctor..and she was convinced that i was progesterone deficient..and my follow up tests showed she was correct. i am now taking natural progesterone..and im slowly seeing an improvement...however i have a long habit to break here..i have become quite agoraphobic..so i suggest that you test your hormone levels with an EXPERT on these things..and maybe that could be an avenue with you?? best of luck. " This is GREAT news. I had my hormones checked and my estrogen and progesterone levels were both very low. I've just start natural estrogen (a patch) and natural progesterone. I REALLY hope this helps. What a miracle that would be after 35 years of struggling with both depression and anxiety. Out of whack hormones can definitely make you feel crazy. Definitely worth checking out. "

" Hey shoosh,

This has been happening to me since last February, on week out of every month, I can't breathe, anxiety through the roof. Imagine, I just got back from the hospital because of this. I had so much trouble breathing last night that at 10:00pm I asked my hubby to bring me to the hospital. I couldn't take a full breath, had a nasty pain in my lungs kind of and then gave myself a huge anxiety attack because of this! That's the 2nd time in 8 months this has happened so bad. My blood pressure was sky high, they did an EKG just in case and then more than 4 hours later, there were so many ppl still ahead of me that I got up and left. Will see my doc tomorrow instead. You should probably see your doc about this! "

" I also have this problem. Trust me. I thought I was nuts. Do you have asthma? I DO NOT. I heard that asthma could be exaspperated during that time (Can't remember where I saw that..but it was one of the times I was searching on the internet). Anyway..after my period is when it happens. And the more I focus on it, the more it's harder to breathe. I also had times where I would be so sad AFTER my period..vs before my period. SO depressed. The breathing thing for my period went away when the crying thing would come in.
I asked my doc to check my hormone levels. She said its very hard to get a reading cause your hormones fluctuate so much. How did all those that had their hormones checked do it? Just wondering.

Thanks. "

" I have this problem too-- with me it is linked to anemia from heavy periods. If you haven't, maybe try having your blood count checked. But yes, I think hormones do play a part in it too! "

" Thank you everyone for your replies. It somewhat helped. I am nearing the end of my period and the breathing threw a straw feeling is not so bad but I do this thing and I cant explain it so hard to but I will try. When I inhale I make a gasp noise it just does it on its own hard to control and it is almost like the noise when you have been crying for hours and it feels like a split second my air is cutt off I notice comes from my throat or higher up in my chest I cant say exactly where but it is freaking me out as I type and it comes and goes for the past few months. I dont get it, it is just one thing after the other... "

" I have asthma and when I have breathing problems I start gettingn anxiety. So its like a viscious cycle. I have found if my fiance starts talking to me abuot anything else I can get past the fear of not breathing and that helps make it easier.

I also have called the paramedics on occassion for a nebulizer. I really like breathing lol. "

" Shoosh I get the same exact thing and my face gets red and my vision gets a little dim. I've had all the tests done as you have. I t really sucks and I have been labled as a hypocondriac in the emergency rooms.... It has let up, but sometimes it comes around when you don't expect it. I was recently prescribed Atenolol for a rapid heartbeat and it's helped alot! Just a small dose will help you 25mgs. All the best! "
