i havent been on both of these for very long. i went into the hospital 4 weeks ago when they thought i was having a heart attack. turned out to be anxiety-panic attacks. three days after that i fell apart and could not calm down or stop crying so went back to the dr. and now have depression and am on zoloft. now i have been reading in the discussion page and the advice section on these meds and i am a little scared to take them. i did not know that ativan was addicting for one thing, that was never explained to me when i got them. but i am afraid to stop taking them as i tried last week and had a terrible anxiety attack. any advice for me to follow. i am really mixed up right now. thank you, judy

Hi been there done that too. Zoloft was the first antidepressant I was on. It never worked for me. As for the Ativan at one point I was taking them daily. When I tried to stop cold turkey I had anxiety attacks like crazy. First tell your Dr.I weaned myself very gradually and it wasn't as bad as cold turkey. Now I take only Ativan as needed, but I really try hard not to take them and sometimes suffer for it.I will use other tools I have learned before that Ativan hits my tongue (maybe outta guilt) Now I think of it as a tool not a crutch.

You know I see it this way...if it helps you to function and enjoy life!! Who cares if it is addicting. I have had a panic disorder for 20 years and felt that way at first but now with my reoccuring panic attacks now that I have turned 40...it's all about feeling good and loving life. Not struggling to cope with symptoms that are hard to concur. Take it from me whose had this panic disorder for 20 years!! I have battled for years and finally realized...an Ativan a day keeps my nerves at bay. I have a true condition and am not a drug addict, is what I tell myself and living and loving life everyday is more important to me than battling this horrible condition!! Best wishes to you my friend on your choices. Think of it this way though....if you had high blood pressure would you take your meds religiously to keep from having a stroke. Same theory with Ativan...stress causes major changes in the body predisposing it to many horrible things. Relax and don't be afraid of addiction...I only take .5mg a day for the last 3 years and never needed to increase. Good luck!!

I have used ativan as a crutch and a tool. It makes me feel better and it is very addictive. When you feel bad all the time you want them all the time. I have to go without them sometimes and it isnt easy. The thing is once you get use to them and want them. Then the Dr.s want to take them away because of the addiction. So then your left to deal with depression, anxiety and ativan withdrawls. So be very cautious in what you do and how much you depend on them. I agree with the comment left before mine. Although there isnt a never ending supply of ativan. they dont usually hand them out very easily. Ask your dr. if this is something he wants you to take permanently or on part time bases
