" Extreme startle response can be switched off with a lot of determination, and keeping a journal will help you see the trigger patterns for the startle effect to spike up.

I have generalized anxiety disorder with social phobia, however, for years, I was not treated for this, I was just told to listen the best I could with the latest set of hearing aids. I learned the hard way to keep my drinks covered if I didn't want to have wet clothes, wear a pad so if I peed my pants, it wouldn't show, and I would push my hands out when someone invaded my space. (this is not a great idea in public, where it looks like you might be hitting someone).

In cognitive behavior therapy treatment plan, this extreme startle response has lessened to where I can be in public places for short periods of time without acute anxiety.

Hope this helps. Best wishes. "
