Smokers and/or those who have quit - anxiety

I've been smoking for about 16-17 years, since i was 16. I really want to quit as its to expensive now to smoke and sometimes i cant even smoke when my anxiety is bad as it kicks it up. I heard people having panic attacks when they quit smoking. I used to smoke a pack a day, and now i'm down to half a pack. I only smoke a full cigarette at work. When i'm at home, i only take a few drags and put it out, then re-lite that one later. My b/f and i ususally share a cigarette. Its almost like I dont want to smoke anymore, but still cant kick the habit. But i'm happy i'm down to half pack a day and only really wanting a few drags.

But i want to know, has quitting smoking made your anxiety less? Do you think smoking is increasing your anxiety?

I just feel like i cant have one when i'm having an attack or about to. And as a smoker we know high stress soothes it.

" I do not smoke.

That being said, anxiety physical symptoms can make it difficult to enjoy the pleasure of the inhaling sensation, so I would keep track of what sets off the trigger.

That may give you a starting point.

Best wishes. "

" I did used to smoke & have quit. 8 months clean. Anyway, I noticed that my anxiety skyrocketed when I started smoking. Now, that I have quit, I am dealing with the same anxiety that started from smoking. "

" Hello,
I am also seriously considering quitting smoking. Here in Canada we have a bunch of great tools provided by our government. I do not know if you would be able to get a personal quitting smoke coach like me but there is online help from the same people who provide the coaching. The link is:

Good luck quitting. "

" There is also a support group on DS for those needing support for quitting and those further in recovery.
I have been quit now for 3 months. I took wellbutrin which is what kicked off the anxiety and I ended up going cold turkey....successfully might I add.
Check with your doctor to decide which plan is best for you. Plan your quit and go into it with a positive attitude...and you should be successful at staying quit. I smoked for over 25 years and was a 1.5 to 2 pack a day smoker. It won't be easy, but worth it.
I'm considering taking up roller skating again which I haven't done in a few decades....so am gonna take it slow. It should help with the anxiety along with the daily walking I have started since my quit.
It has been proven that smoking causes stress and anxiety instead of relieving it.....so I say go for the quit!!!!! "
