Depression, anxiety and insonnia out of the blue

I don't understand what has happened to me. I thought I was losing my job and was going through money issues and I started to panic and go through a depression. Things have finally worked out with work and money. Money is still very tight, but I'm able to pay my bills. My OB started me on Effexor. Went into huge panic attacks. Stopped those meds and went to a shrink and started taking Celexa. I was taking whatever it took to sleep, but have slowed down to just Ambien. I try not to take xanax, only sometimes if I really need it. The Celexa was giving me panic and I stopped that. The panic has slowed down a little bit but I wake up with a panic attack in the middle of the night, usually around 3:00 am. I don't know if its because I can't sleep or what. I'm still a little depressed and I HAVE NO IDEA WHY! I'm 45 and my hormones were tested and everything was negative for perimenopause (I've had no period since April and it's July 4th). What is wrong with me? I want to be my normal bubbly self. This is not me and has never been me. It's so upsetting. I've been off Celexa since the 30th. Any help would be appreciated.

" Three things I suggest to see what might help you through this challenge.

Vitamin D often helps reset the hormone level back to normal when it's been stressed off the scale.

Relax. Do not force yourself to try to sleep. Instead, force yourself to stay up.

Write down something nice to remind yourself of what "feeling good" is like to help beat the depression.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes. "

" I understand how you feel. I am 41 and had a major panic attack and it caused me not to sleep for 3 months. I have been on so many medications. I can not believe I am still working. I want to be normal too! You could be going through withdrawls from the medication and that could be causing your anxiety. Did you used to take more Xanax and cut it down? That can cause many withdrawl symptoms. I hope you are feeling better. "

" If your mind is stuck on worrying about "what is wrong?", chances are you are continuing to keep your brain working in the stem portion. That's where the fight/flight response is and where you are right now. Your brain does not see that there is not any real danger.

It will pass. Focus on relaxing and not wondering what is wrong. That is the secret to losing the panic attacks. When you quit "feeding" the panic, your brain triggers that the "alarm" is over and you will start to feel normal again.

The medications could have affected your nervous system too and it takes time for it to calm down. I went through a phase similar to you and ended up have withdrawal from Ambien! Try incorporating some natural herbs to help you relax at night (valerian, Kava, Chamomile. I would also add some Magnesium at night to help your muscles relax. Ever take an Epsom salt bath? Do that before bed too.

Wishing you a good night of rest and relaxation. "

" Perhaps your thyroid is off. I had the same thing for 10 years and it happened when I came off a depression med. Major anxiety from it. I am around your age and found lumps on my thyroid. Since taking some supplements it has really helped everything including sleep. "

" Thank you all for the responses. I was taking Vit D and Magnesium and I stopped those with everything else. I'll start them again with the Epsom salts baths. Keep the responses coming. Xanax was NEVEr my drug of choice. This is the first time I've had to take them along with Ambien. My doctor told me that when I'm ready she would get me off Ambien. Any thoughts? "

" You only want to take an epsom salt bath 2 - 3 times a week. "
