I am a 47 day recovering alcoholic. I am now told that I need to drop my 5 mg a day Diazepam. Any suggestions on how? I have been on it for 1 year, does anyone know if I will experience withdrawal?
Thanks

" Is valium the only med you're on for anxiety? If so, why are you being told to stop it? If you've found it helpful, but need to quit, I'd suggest talking with your md about lexapro or another ssri to help with the anxiety.

Good luck! "

" Defintely follow your doctor's advice on this but the good news is that 5mg a day is not a huge dose so hopefully it shouldn't be too difficult. Good luck! "

" You might experience withdrawal, but i am surprised that it still works anyway. Normally a drug like that you tend to become used to it very quick and therefore have to get the dose increased. I would imagine that your dr would reduce your dose gradually, maybe put you on the 2mg tablets instead of just stopping you. You will feel a lot better for coming off the tablets and being able to appreciate that fact that you are coping on your own again. Good luck xx "

" First of all, congratulations. Secondly, have you considered taking 2.5mg a day to ween off the Diazepem? I don't know if it's a good idea to go cold turkey. "

" It would be a bad idea to go cold turkey. Your Dr should advise you to wean yourself off them gradually, possibly
5....2......5
for a week, then
5.....2.....2
then,
2.....2.....2
and so on.
Good luck "

" You aren't on any antidepressants? I use to have a problem with alcohol because of my anxiety and depression. But thru experience, relize the booze was only escalating my mood disorder. I'm no doc, but if the med is helping you, I don't get why he's taking you off. Ya know, with antidepreesants I didn't feel the desire to drink. Well, I did and do sometimes, don't get me wrong. It just helps my seratonin level to be stabilized in my brain. I think most people drink to acsess and do drugs for the same reasons...worry and depression.Maybe you can try an antidepressant and after a few weeks, MAYBE wean off the Diazepam. I'm perimenopausal, so I need the occasional xanax...no ifs ands or buts. I also take a melatonin at night for a better sleep...EVERY night. I don't know why, but it really works for those alcohol cravings, seriously. "
