Which one would you advise , i've had a tramatic 20 yrs over family issues and of course the anxiety but will only have the money for one or the other but it's because of my family issues i got the anxiety so not sure what route to approch , any advice would be great !

I can only speak for myself but I have had both counciling and CBT, in the first instance I started with counciling and had 6 or 7 sessions, I had limited success with that, and my anxiety soon came back, then I had one to one CBT which helped me more in the longer term, It was better for me because It involved( homework) from the theropist so I could activley work on my anxiety away from the theropy. If you like, I can reccomend a free CBT based website, it is www.livinglifetothefull.com, I am not saying it will work for everyone but I can only go off my own experience, I hope this helps, best of look, Bob.

Thanks Bob , Thats funny you say that , my doctor told me about that site and i forgot about it . I wil go on that site today and that would mean i would have money for the counciling. Thanks again x

i agree with bob even though counseling help me as well cbt helped me alot more in the long run. that is also a really good website he gave you. lots of luck in your journey to get well.

I really had better results with cognitive therapy because I felt I was given different and better tools to use. AS in counseling, I felt I got into aha moments, sometimes I didnt feel like ok fine but now what? lol. The cognitive counselor offered me many different means to address my emotions including workbooks, books to read, hypnotherapy, meditation and more. For me, that was quicker to use and often I felt whe I went through the thought changes I understood myself better adn got to the same place the therapy would have gotten me too.
I too had some family issues and cognitive therapy also taught me about setting boundries and limits so that I could look after my own interests. I had been more concerned with not wanting to hurt anyones feelings therefore forgetting my own selfs preservation. hope this helps.

Thanks a mill for all ye're feedback . I do hate the thought of dragging up the past with a councilor. It makes me tired just thinkin about it and i must say i never look back and have forgiven my mum for what she done. It wasn't her fault , its a disease. So i think cognitive theraphy would be the way to go alright. i did try living life to the full but coldn t get into the site . Anyone kow wherei'm going wrong there? Thanks

Hi there, CBT is fantastic, but as someone who also had a traumatic childhood, I found that I had to go back and face a lot of the painful episodes from my past so I could release all the pent up feelings that were causing the anxiousness. This is why it was great for me to see a CBT therapist who also talked me through the difficult times. The CBT was essential though because it's not enough to just talk about your issues, you also need to CBT tools to help make the changes you need to make life different.
Most CBT therapists do both. Best of luck!
