LA test with warfarin confusion...

I read on the Pulmonary Embolism group the other day that if you are on warfarin/coumadin and have the Lupus Anticoagulant test that you can and WILL get a false positive. I FREAKED out and that's an understatement. I was angry and excited at the same time thinking YES I may not have it and may not have to worry constantly about having miscarriages in the future. I worried all weekend. I called my hematologist first thing today. The actual hematologist called me back and said this was absolutely completely FALSE. There is NO chance the warfarin will change the results of the LA test results. I was relieved and sad at the same time knowing that I do in fact have the blood clotting disorder and have a chance of multiple miscarriages. I have been tested positive twice and will be tested for a third and final time in about 2 months. We expect this one to be positive as well. Especially since when I have my blood drawn, the blood stops flowing after every 1-2 vials and they have to re stick me and often end up in my knuckles and feet to get enough blood to fill all the vials. That is typical of someone with a blood clotting disorder. The phlebotomists said they can spot it a mile away. I trust my hematologist as he is considered the top hematologist in the state and is always in the magazines of the top 100 doctors in the state. He helped save my life in the hospital as well. I wonder why other doctors have said that blood thinners cause a false positive. Makes me wonder why there is such a difference in opinion or even if there are different tests that can be done for those on warfarin. Who knows. Just wanted to share what I learned today. Thanks!

thanks for the reply and Im sorry to hear you have to deal with all of this but at least you know a cause now and can get back on track. I think tomorrow that will draw my blood for a new test since the 1st one was in the hospital and they calim the high ose of heparin may have swayed results but it seems you dr. thinks that isn't the case.. I will bring this up tomorrow for sure. also getting my H1N1 shot which I am nervous about

Hi April,
I agree with your dr. Blood thinners do nothing for the auto-immune antibodies our bodies produce which causes our problems other then thinning the blood and keeping it from clotting. It would not change your LA results. What would change your results would be if you were on plaquenil or an immuno suppressant. Thats the problem when you read stuff on the internet. Alot of it is false info. Even some dr.s who are suppose to know about aps give out false information. Been there, done that. Even the APS organization has incorrect info on APS. Scarey in my opinion. When you get pregnant you will be put on thinners and monitored by a high risk OB. They can catch anything before it causes problems for the most part. Stress exacerbates APS so try not to stress out too much. You have a good dr. who is giving you good care. You can always ask me questions as well since I have had APS for 10 years, been extrememly sick from it, on severe meds for it, and had a successful pregnancy :) Melissa
