What is Ankylosing Spondylitis

Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is a chronic form of arthritis--it is an inflammatory disease that causes joints, cartilage or other fibrous tissue (such as ligaments and tendons)...

Chiropractic adjustments?

Hello all. I am new here. I found this site cause I have to do an assignment for school on medical support groups. Since I have AS, I thought this would be a good group to look into (I thought this assignment would be a drag, but I'm glad I found this site!).

So my question to you all is what is your experience with chiropractic adjustments? In the past, I have gone to my chiropractor many times, and I have had some moderate success. I am relatively symptom free now, but I do have some occassional stiffness in the morning and late at night. One time in the past my chiropractor really did help my bum shoulder that I had, that I know for sure.

But now my situation might be different. I had an MRI of my neck and spine a few months ago for symptoms of MS I was having (which I thankfully don't have also), and my doctor mentioned that it looks like I'm starting to get some fusion. I don't know where the fusion is exactly (I have an appointment with him in a few weeks). I was wondering if chiropractic adjustments might not be okay for me to try again since I have this fusion starting.

Does anyone have any advise on this, or have tried going to a chiropractor in the past also?

" I went to one a few years ago once and made up my mind when I got out not to go back. For me it was a waste of time and money but i had to try. My spine is in one piece and it doesn't want to be manipulated or adjusted in any way. I have heard others who had good results but then not everybodies the same, good luck to you. "

" Hi detabor. If you have some fusing happening its probably not advisable to have chiropractic manipulation, until you at least know what you are dealing with. Check with your rheumy first, because it may be suitable for you to have chiropractic treatment without actual manipulation.

I will admit I am hesitant to have any spinal manipulation done nowadays, because in the past I had a mild pain in my lower back, and walked out of the chiropractor's with a fully blown disc which resulted in years of problems, and like RissaJoy - a lot of AAUUGGGHH!!!!

Wishing you all the best. Cheers "

" I have seen at least 7 chiros. over the last 20+ years. I finally concluded they helped enough to keep me coming back! Some info I read from an AS organization that said absolutely not.

What I think did help was physical therapy at the Hruska Clinic. They have people trained throughout the US. I think their site is at Hruska Clinic.com. They also have an associated group, Postural Restoration Institute.

I also find that the exercises specifically for AS are good. "

" Since AS is the fusion of spinal vertebra through ossifications, I wouldn't recommend it. Most doctors who are allopathically trained (that's M.D. not D.O.) don't recommend chiropractic treatment and many do not even feel that it's a valid method to treat back problems.

That being said, I saw a chirpractor for about 4 years--all through high school. When my back began to hurt a lot more, my chirpractor said it was because my hips were not aligned correctly and that I had an anterior rotation. When he put them into place, I had such intense pain that I actually cried and could hardly walk to my car. That adjustment triggered my first flare-up. If your spine is fusing or is already fused, then the vertebrae are no longer able to move and rotate, which is why advanced AS patients present with a neck that is bent forward like a turtle. Any manipulation or excess pressure from falling, lifting, or turning could cause the bone to break. AS patient's have very brittle spines. See the video at this link for the seriousness of dealing with AS patients.

" hello i am what you call super fused even chest as well as all over, please reconsider any chiro, i did that for years before i fused, but now it is dangerous and can cause us to break bone tissue once we fuse we are much easier to break, fusion is where your immune system sees that you have inflammation and thinks it needs to fix it by growing new bone so your spine or parts of it can grow together like cement. you may wake up feeling 7 feet tall ha, but if you think it is starting try to sleep in a straight position as if you are too bent over you can get stuck in that position with fusion. peace and light to you . steve "
