I have just been diagnosed of having root+ascending aortic aneurysm. it is about 50 mm now, and is most likely to need an operation. Any suggestion of good specialist centers in the states? I live in the UK but heard that there are more specialist centers who do lot of similar operations in the states. I heard of Cleveland clinic...any other good centres to compare to?
Many thanks and God bless you all Mike Posted on 08/29/09, 09:44 am |

Good luck to you.

Dr Anthony DiScipio at Dartmouth-Hitchcock hospital is a pioneer in the field. He did mine and has discovered different things that are very important. They are located in New Hampshire or online DHMC.org

Mike,
I had a 5 mm unruptured aneurysm coiled by Dr. Lopes at CINN (in Chicago) in April 2008. Everything turned out perfectly. He is a leader in the area of coiling and his support staff is wonderful. Ron

Hi Mike!
I also had an ascending aortic aneurysm. Mine was located at the aortic root. I chose an internationally recognized surgeon by the name of Joseph Coselli in Houston, TX. He trained with DeBakey. I was very impressed by both his skill and his warm personality. Being an Registered Nurse, I am all about being a proactive patient. He is very willing to speak to you about your treatment choices and come to the right choice for you. If you have any questions, you may reach me here. Good luck in your search, Tina PS In your search, be sure to ask the surgeons how many of THESE SPECIFIC surgeries they perform sucessfully on a monthly basis. One Dr at Mayo Clinic compaired heart surgeries to driving a car. He told me that once you have operated on the heart, you can do any of the necessary procedures. My response to him was, "Yes, but there is a difference between driving a Mercedes and a Volkswagon". How many do you perform a month and who does more? He responded with Dr Coselli's name and another from New York. I had already researched Coselli and that gave me more confidence in him.

I failed to mention that I flew from Illinois to Texas for my surgery. The flight home wasn't bad at all. Of course, yours will be a longer flight. I stayed at a hotel for a day before going back home.
When I came home, I had complications, Coselli personally got on the phone to my Drs in Illinois to tell him what he thought my treatment should be. A funny side note...My Drs and surgeons all flocked to my bedside when they heard Coselli did my surgery. He must be the "Rock Star of Ascending Aneurysm Repair"! My Cardiologist in Chicago now sends her difficult cases to him. She is part of group that specializes in adults with congenital heart defects. Good Luck! Tina

my aneurysm was fixed at UCLA Medical Center by renowned surgeon, Dr. John Frazee. He did an absolutely wonderful job that's why I'm here to tell my story. Good luck finding the right surgeon and hospital!
