An Investigation into the Role of Ice-Eating in Individuals with Iron Deficiency
√ Are you anemic? √ Do you crave ice, ice chips or ice water? √ Does eating ice help you feel better? √ Ever wonder why? Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania are conducting a study to understand why it is that individuals with anemia crave and eat ice. Who can participate? Anyone age 18 and older who is anemic and eats a lot of ice, ice chips or drinks a lot of ice water is eligible to participate. What does this study entail? You will be asked to come to the University of Pennsylvania and complete a number of tasks – including tests of memory and reaction time on a computer game. You CANNOT eat ice or consume anything cold for at least ONE HOUR before participating. The study will take approximately one hour of your time. Either you can bring information with you about your hemoglobin and serum ferritin levels or we can contact your physician (with your consent), if that is easier for you. When can I participate? We are scheduling participants right now! Email Jessica Olli at olli@sas.upenn.edu to schedule a time. Will I be compensated in any way? Unfortunately, we are not able to pay you for your time. If you are interested, we can send you information about the results of our study. It is our hope that this study will help to explain why it is that individuals who have anemia tend to crave and eat ice. Posted on 11/05/09, 01:11 pm |

Wow! Wish I were closer. I had started a new job, and it was summer, it was hot, I found ice comforting. I thought I may have been keeping myself cool subconsciously? - but realistically it was even on the cooler days - it was more maddening as it went on.Then at the end of the summer developed more symptoms and found out my levels were low, was not even allowed to drive myself to the hospital, though I had worked the midnight shift before.
The ice then made sense as I had heard of the craving being related, but never understood it as I had heard that if your body needs calcium, you crave milk, if your body needs vit c, you crave oj etc but never saw where ice would play into that. Good luck with the study.
