Slow Guts?

Ok the results from the capsule endoscopy came in the mail =/

Apparently my digestion is so fubared that the camera capsule never left my stomach. They got 9 hours of photos from my stomach. My doctor noted that this is not normal, but didn't recommend a treatment or suggest a cause for the gastric sluggishness.

I swallowed the camera at 8:30 on Tuesday morning and I didn't pass it until Sunday evening.

The Doc didn't recommend repeating the test unless my hemoglobin drops again, and at that point he would have to use the EGD procedure to place the camera in my small bowel (thus bypassing my crazy stomach).

I have a follow up on Thursday with the hematologist (with a hemoglobin check)

Exciting stuff :P

Does anyone have any experience with a slow gut? Should I be on a stool softener or laxative? Normal digestion from start to finish is 24-72 hours, so my 5 day span without going (which is quite normal for me) is a bit excessive.

I wonder if my slow digestion is a function of my body trying to get every last bit of nutrition out of my food?

" Just a suggestion, have you been checked for diabetes? I know that can cause stomach emptying issues, but I think it may be that it is usually too fast. Not sure though. I would push the Dr.s to give you a better diagnosis. In my experience things never seem to resolve themselves...only worsen over time. You she strongly advocate for yourself, you may be a patient, but that ultimately make you a customer too, and you paid for a service that gave you no answers, This must mean something, and we are always told to be "regular." I'd ask if going every 5 days in regular, and if they are going to do something about it instead of letting you speculate and play Dr.! Even a diet diary to see if you are getting proper nutrition and fiber, something.

Just a rant from me irritated for you. God Bless.

Tracy "

" My 11 yrs. old son has a slow transit colon. He did a Stitz Mark study to determine that as he's always had issues w/being constipated since he was a baby and more so since toddler years. He now has a chronically stretched colon from the constipation. He's been through many tests which came back negative for Hirschspring's disease or Celiac Disease. We are scheduled to go to Cincinatti Children's Hospital in September this year to a bowel management clinic to see if that can help him any. Last resort will be to have surgery to remove the stretched out portions of his colon.

Is your doctor a Gasternologist that did the test and not offer you any answers or treatment? (sp?) "

" Yes, he's a gastroenterologist who gave me no answers.

I'll ask the hematologist about the diabetes and hormone/thyroid issue on Thursday.

I'll update after that (if I have answers) :( "

" Hope the tests gives you some answers. See if you can get a referral to a different Gastro doctor for a 2nd opinion. "

" 1st of all- Tabby I love the new photo :)

2nd The A1C came back at 5.9, my thyroid is fine, hemoglobin went from 12.5 to 12.1 so not a really significant drop.

I have a follow up with my OB from the ablation on the 10th and I'm going to ask him to draw a hemoglobin to see if it has gone down any more.

How is everyone else? I can't shake this sinus headache. It's been rainy here for days and it's killing me! "

" Thanks for pic comment. That is two of my three cats. Orange tabby cat is named Princess and the black/white long hair is named Gizmo.

Great job on your A1C! Mine was about that the last time they checked and will re-check it in a month or so. My b-12 came back within in normal range but now showing some blood in urine. It was done a week after my cycle so they want to re-test about two weeks before my next cycle, which will have to be towards the end of this month because I'm close to starting this month's cycle. I know I'm just tried of tests/doctors, etc. It seems to be taking over my life since I was diagnosed with Pulmonary Embolism/DVT back at the beginning of March. I try not to let it get me down though because at least I'm alive! Not many w/PEs survive.

Hope your sinuses get to better soon! I'll have to send you some of our hot sunshine and you send us your rain. lol

God Bless,

Tabby "
