I have recently been diagnosed with anaemia.
It had my folate and b12 checked which came back fine but my ferritin level was low I cant remeber how low now i think was around 2.

i was wonddering what the cause of this can be?

I was told its prob my diet, but i am not all that convinced seen as I have been taking iron replacement for about 6 weeks now and with very little impact(my feritin has only gone upto 3.1). what else can cause iron deficency anaemia?

thankyou!

" Chronic bleeding, menstrual cycle, a problem with absorbing the iron in your gut: Celiac disease, gentic disorders, bleeding disorders, autoimmune disease, leukemia-

The most common is diet. If you are on the suppliments- take them on an empty stomach with orange juice or a vitamin C tab, these two things help your body absorb the iron more fully. Iron in your food is always easier for your body to absorb than a vitamin or suppliment. Here is the best website I've found for Iron sources in food:

I hope this helps- the best thing is to keep in contact with your doctor and learn about the symptoms of a critically low hemoglobin level (Shortness of breath, dizziness, fainting, rapid heart beat) and let them know of any blood in your stool or heavy periods. Good luck! "

" Question: when taking iron suplements is your stool hard, dark, etc? if so, maybe the iron is going right thru you. That would be true if you have pernicious anemia (B-12 deficiency by a damaged intrinsic factor). most doctors dont test for intrinsic factor. took me 15 years of complaining before they finally did. It was ulcers that damaged my stomach enough that the intrinsic factor gradually stopped being created, but a number of other things can too. My first symptom was slight anemia, next a trace of blood in urine, then cold feeling on backs of hands, some "writers cramp" without writing, arthritic pain in feet without xray showing arthritis, and it all just got worse for years. i recommend anyone with any unexplained neurologic symptoms and anemia at least check b-12. doesnt hurt and can help. " I had an etopic preg in 1981, with a bad post op infection which damaged a particular part of the bowel and made me wheat intolerant. Which is not celiac, bit less common, but still have to be on the celiac diet for life. Which infection started my anemia problems. Had biopsy etc done to check. Also diabetic. Shopping is frustrating at times. Would just love a soft fresh bread roll, real bread, not the GF type cardboard type. But grateful for that too. "

" Who knows I say, I have just been through every test known to the dr's and nothing has been found, and so I am now told I will need to have iron transfusions every 3 months. It is just a roller coaster that I would love to hop off pls "
