Can you have anemia and not feel good?

I have a friend at work who has no iron in her blood. She is going through every test you can think of (oncology), and they have found that she is VERY anemic, but she feels great. The only reason that she went to the doc is because she started losing 5 lbs a week, but not eating any different. In fact, she started pushing food into herself to see if it would stop, but it didn't.
Now she has to get iron infusions and they are still running tests, she had a bone marrow test last week, but don't know the results yet. How can you be so anemic and feel so good? She has energy, not weak or tired, alert, etc, and she just can't figure out how she can feel this good without any iron in her blood. Any advice or has anyone felt the same way?!?!?! Seems very unusual for someone so afflicted. However, if she had a decent diet and was getting lots of rest maybe she wasn't feeling as drained as most anemics do. I know I thought that ALL my other health problems were to blame for how bad I was feeling and I was surprised to learn that I was even anemic because I was eating loads of protein. I mean I CRAVED red meat like a fratboy. But now that I am on meds I don't have those cravings anymore.

I'm anemic now and have had bone marrow aspiration and biopsy. I have about enough iron in my marrow to NOT be anemic, but it's not getting used. I was anemic five years ago, and didn't know it. I think I've been anemic other times too, and just took iron and never got checked again. So yes, you can feel OK and be anemic. I've unintentionally lost weight (26 lbs) and I feel like crap right now. Kidneys can start failing and NOT send a hormone to the marrow, letting it know that more blood cells are needed. I'm going through a process of elimination, trying to find the cause of my anemia. I don't have leukemia, lymphoma or multiple myeloma. Colon is OK. But I had Hep B many years ago, and my own personal guess is that my use of prescription strenght ibuprofen for years has compromised my liver. Anemia is a tricky thing to figure out! Good luck!

OMG, I just noticed the title on my thread. I meant for it to read: Can you have anemia and feel good> I am so sorry for the mistake. I can start a new thread or just take it from here. Any suggestions?!?!?!
