Start Iron Infusion on Tuesday (freaked out!)

Hi All,

Am a newly married and happy 34 year old with what I am told is iron deficiancy. My hematologist believes that it is from my gastic bypass in 2004. I lost 110 pounds but over the last two years have gained a bit of it back. Am currently waiting for my blood panel results from the nurse at my Dr.'s office.
Really scared. Have read all of the posts on this and am scared that I will have a lifetime of feeling like this. I am a really upbeat allied health professional myself, I love to work out etc. but over the last year I have had sever fatigue, hear attack scares, sever anxiety, mood swings, lower leg pain....unbelievable brain fog.....I feel like I am the biggest hypochondriac alive as well. I am so upset that all of my hard work is ending up like this. My husband and I want to have children, at least one of our own, and now that looks iffy. The side effects are a little scary as well and going in for an iron infusion every week for 6 hrs will not really look good with my job. They will understand but.... If anyone has ANY suggestions, please comment. Also, little prayers that it is NOT something more serious are welcome. Thanks in advance.

" wow!! we have alot in common...my bypass surgery was in 2004 and this March 3 I was diag with iron def anemia. I have went thru a blood transfusion and 4 iron infusions. The endoscopy, colonoscopy, cat scan, and blood test. Everything points to the iron def because I have no internal bleeding. I have made a goal to make sure all gastric bypass long termers know the symptoms. I had all that you had plus the cracking on the edges of my mouth, heart beating like it was going to pop out, my body itched all over, insomnia, and total exhaustion. My blood pressure started fluctating, the lowest it got was 88/50 while standing. I feel so much better now. My iron is up to 11.7, before the last infusion, I am taking iron pill. My doctor explains it as my body beingB a factory. If the factory is out of iron it takes all the stored iron and you eventually run out. Now that my factory has iron it should be able to attract the iron I am taking. I was so faithful with all my vitamins and B12 I didn't think this would happen to me. I AM FIXABLE!!! And believe me, I will be asking for my blood test the minute I start feeling like I did. I do not want ANYONE to have to get to a level 2 in stored iron before they figure out what is going on. I thought it was all in my head but it isn't. God brought us to it, He will bring us thru it!!! Good luck and let me know how you are doing. I am here for you!! "

" Hi Trainer and Mrshillitis- we need a "post Gastric Bypass supportg group"!
I had my surgery in 1988 and just found out that due to the surgery bypassing my duodenum, my body is incapable of absorbing iron, as it is ONLY absorbed in the duodenum!

I have the exact same symptoms you are reporting and have been scared that I would be a bedridden hypochondriac like my mother who is bipolar and really frustrating to deal with.

I am happy to report that my hematologist has told me that most of my symptoms are related to my anemia and I'll feel like a brand new person after IV Iron treatments. I cannot wait! I start today with a test dose, praying that my body accepts it. I have been unable to exercise for a couple of years due to fatigue and exhaustion, so I too have added some of the weight back on. Now I am fantasizing about feeling great and being active again! don't let the fear break you down- all the cancer scares went through my head too, but my hematologist says it's all explained by the gastric bypass surgery.

My best to you and your families!

:) Wendallyn "

" I just had one today, which will be a course of at least 3 or 4, one a week. Iron infusion is risky for anaphyllaxis shock so be sure to heave your doctor order 50mgs of benedryl to be given in your IV before the iron runs in. Everyone id different but I did this last summer a year ago and I'm doing the same treatment this time. If you have any more questions please feel free to ask "
