Hi I am new to this website and I was told yesterday that I am having an Iron Infusion next week. I didn't think to ask what happens during this procedure and what do I need to bring with me. There was an info sheet but I am not sure if I am under during this procedure? Am I able to do things during the 3 hours I am being infused? Like listen to an ipod or use my laptop or read? Any other info would be useful as so far I do't know of anyone that has had this done. I have poor circulation too so should I bring a hot water bottle. I always get cold in hospitals. I also have M.E/CFS.

Hi, I just had my 1st one 2 weeks ago and basically they started the IV and brought me a blanket and i just chilled - but my infusions only take 20-30 min...i wonder whats up with the time difference? i see no reason why you couldn't bring tunes or a book.

Yeah that is odd. Maybe you didn't need as much iron??? I didn't get too cold. I am cold all the time especially when stationary so wasn't any colder than normal but hard to do anything or even sleep with so many people around and noise.
I went to the specialist again recently and he didn't seem to think i needed another infusion. The tests show i am not anemic anymore but they tested me when i was eating seaweed every day. I find when i don't i started feeling drastic and the symptoms are typical of anemia. I am fine now though as i am vigilant about eating sea weed. I also have kelp powder everyday. Seems that the kelp powder is not enough and there is something about eating/chewing that helps the anemia. I have had discussions with other people about this and they find the same. The kelp powder really helps with making my nails stronger too.

I have has many iron infusions,,I took a book and just read, depends on how many cc ur getting. It could take anywhre from 45min-3hrs.
The headache is an effect of the infusion they nmay have giving u too much. I got a headache once when they did a double infusion.My problem was heavy periods also. In july 09 I had a total hysterectomy, and I am feeling almost brand new...LOL Has ur dr.discussed hysterctomy? I would ask it beats going 3x a week for infusion for the rest of ur life..Well that was my schedule..Good luck to you and feel better soon.

Next time you have one done ask for 50mgs of benedryl to be infused into your line before the iron. this will help if there would be any reaction. Just because it went ok the first time doesn't mean it will be ok the 2nd time. I will not do it without this, it's too scary. Many doctors don't like iron infusions because of the risk of anaphyllaxis which is a severe allergic reaction. I have had them and believe me, you don't want to experience one!
