Advice:
Joint pain & swelling a symptom of anemia or not?

I recently visited the doctor about my lingering joint pain and swelling, most noticably in my hands and feet and also lots of pain in my knees. After blood tests were done, it was discovered one of my blood counts was 98 when it should be around 130, haemoglobin I think. The doctor said that was the cause of those symptoms. I thought for sure it would be rheumatoid arthritis. My ANA test hasn't come back yet, so it's not completely ruled out yet, but I'd love to know if he's right. I couldn't find any info on the internet about Joint Pain and Anemia unless it was also associated with RA. Thanks for your help!

" In what way was the doctor wrong? You mean that the joint pain had nothing to do with the hemoglobin count? Did you find out what it was when you got your second opinion? Just curious; I have joint pain and I am anemic, so I was wondering if they were connected at all. "

" My son has the same thing happen to him, his hands & feet kept turning purple, which we later found out that it was his joints causing this, he kept running a fever, & his lymph nodes wereswollen & his blood tests revealed that he was anemic.. but it turns out that all of these things tie into one thing- SYSTEMIC juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.. the systemic kind is what makes it different then normal arthritis. HTH... :) PS.. google it & read up on it!! "

" I also have had a lot of trouble with my feet swelling and going purple-ish at times and just thought it was fluid retention. My haemoglobin was very low and iron levels indicated symptomatic anemia, so I am following your entries with great interest. If you find out anything further that helps you, please let me know. Will also take lishapoo36's advice and google too. "

" In addition to the anemia, I have fibromyalgia and psoriatic arthritis, both of which are auto-immune diseases. I've read where people with AI diseases are often anemic. Hard to tell what causes what, but if you are having pain and swelling in your hands, feet and knees, I would see a rheumatologist. I have the same issues, and now have a diagnosis. "

" Hi, my name is Tyler and I am a medical student. I came across this sight while doing some research. It sounds like a lot of you have the same type of symptoms. Many times anemia is a result of an abnormal shape of the blood cell...sickle cells. The reason for the joint pain is that when these sickle cells are traveling through the blood vessels, they don't have the same ability to flow freely like normal shaped cells do. In your joints, the capillaries feeding blood to those areas are exceptionally small, many times only large enough for a single blood cell to travel through at a time. The abnormal sickle cell shape causes blockage in these areas resulting in swelling, pain and lack of blood flow to the joints. Hope this helps. "
