Female, mid/late twenties with androgenic alopecia

Hiya,
Just wanted to introduce myself here.
I`ve just been diagnosed with androgenic alopecia, or rather, I diagnosed myself and the doctor confirmed it.
Have been losing my hair in clumps since I came off the pill last year. This has happened every time I have come off the pill before so I though it was normal until I developed a bonified receding hairline. I read up on it and went to my doc who laughed at me and had never heard of androgenic alopecia . However, she arrainged the hormone tests as I asked and when they came back, sure enough my adrogens were to high. My level of Androsteiendione (forgive the bad spelling) is 10.3, where the upper limit of normal for women 9.9, so ti`s through the roof. I am curently taking Yasmin for it but have not noticed any chance yet.

Im so depressed about this, almost to the point of feeling suicidal. I can`t`wear my hair back anymore because you can see my thinning patches and it has really affected my self confidence. I feel so unnattractive and un-feminine.
I am planning to try Rogain fro women and some natural anti androgens like Saw Palmeto etc. I would like to go on a proper DHT blocker like Avodart or Procepia but it seems that doctors here know NOTHING about female hairloss and despite the fact that it is caused by DHT , they are reluctant to prescribe blockers and instead spout unhelpful rubbish about proper hair styling etc.
Im glad I found this board and sorry for the rant, Im just pretty upset about it all.

" I am also new to this board as well.

I have just been diagnosed with androgenic alopecia, just like you I pretty much diagnosed myself. After several visits with various doctors, I finally got an answer to my hairloss.

I am HORRIFIED, every morning I cry, every evening I cry, I wake up having crazy hair dreams.

I have always taken pride in my appearance and my health, for this to happen to me I am HORRIFIED.

If it wasn't for my son----my rock----I don't know how I would get up each morning.

My self confidence is non-existent, I feel extremely unatractive, and am shying away from my husband.

The worse part was when I realized that I couldn't hide my bald spot and thinning patches anymore with headbands, powder, clip on bangs, etc.....

I recently got a wig and some hair wraps.....but I feel like a freak having to wear something on my head all the time.

I am trying Rogaine for Men, but I was told it will not re-grow new hair, it will just stop it from spreading too quick. I don't know what else to do.....you are right doctors know NOTHING about female hairloss and it's very frustrating.

Feel free to rant, this is what the site is for ! "

" I've had this since I was twelve (and was born with thin hair!) so I have never experienced a full head of hair! Not only is my hair thin at the part, but my hair is also very fine! Do not worry, hope is there, and I would recommend maybe a birth control pill like DIane 35 that controls the androgens while also containing synthetic estrogens. This isn't available in America, I don't think. :/ "

" I have had this for about 15 years, and have found that a short, pixie style hair cut is wonderful. It makes your hair look fuller, and it really boost's your confidence. "

" I'm new to all of this but have found that Toppik and even just eyeshadow on the thinning parts will help. I've also recently started considering a fall or a wig. I'd personally rather cover up with those once I have to than to have my scalp showing. It's just easier for me to prepare and pick something out now. Then when the time comes......I'll get something really close to my own hair. Maybe later I'll start experimenting with fun wigs. "

" Hi everyone! I'm new here too. I must disclose that while I do have very fine hair, and my own hair issues, I do not have Alopecia. However I have been working with a studio here in Tampa, FL that helps women suffering hair loss. One of their good friends is Kayla Martel, Miss Delaware 2011. She has Alopecia, and often talks to young women who are also dealing with hair loss. She has a blog that is linked to the Hair Therapy for Women Facebook page.

" Hi there. Have you considered a non surgical solution? I was reliant on Rogaine and then I realised it was actually causing me further hair loss. I have found my ideal solution and not looked back - would be happy to discuss "

" hi everyone, i just want to share to the readers of this post my story, i never thought that hair loss would really be a problem for me, im 19 years old, and im falling a lot of hair recently, it's been a months now since i shed a lot of hair, after that i become really obsess with the falling hair that it comes to the point that i actually count all the hairs that falls from my head. i really didnt know what is trully hapenning to me and i havent consulted my doctor yet, i've done simple measures like combing my hair carefully and taking mega doses of vitamins, i really dont know what is happening to me, im afraid to get bald sooner or later. it would really affect my self confidence. this is really depressing "
