Hello,
My mom is disabled and no longer able to walk due to health problems. Being that she is now wheelchair bound, we are looking into getting her a power chair. (electronic wheelchair) Do any of you have any suggestions on what is good? What to stay clear of? Things to look for? This is all new to us and we are a little overwhelmed with the options. Thanks :) Posted on 08/24/09, 07:08 pm |

Do your Mom have an OT yet? She/He should be able to recommend what's best for her specific needs.
My youngest has an OT who also specializes in wheelchair fittings/settings. She does a great job and knows all the ins and outs. Good Luck.

I don't have any particular wisdom on this but it strikes me that is you looked at where you mom is and what she needs, you could make up a list of HER requirements. For example, some chairs might help lift her into bed, or help with bathroom transfer or might be a little narrower to get thru older home doors. Once you have the requiements, compare them to each model and see what they can and cannot do. The one you pic should be able to satisfy all of her mandatory requirements and maybe a few "nice to have" thinks like being very easy to charge batteries, etc. Have you also considered how you will transport this if you go to a store and she wants to go with you. Most of these chairs are quite heavy because of the lead acide batteries that run them. There are lifts and platforms designed to carry these on the back of car with a trailer hitch opening. I like the idea about talking to the OT folks as they have a lot more experience and wisdom on this. // John

jazzy has good chairs and your mom if old enough may qualify for a a power chair through medicare. She would have to have medicare
and have a qualfing condition and need the char for home use. My mom's chair did not cost her a penny . The list price was $ 5,00.00 we got a perscription from her doctor . When medicare pays for the chair they are very strict . The chair is for in home use. So even though you make use it out side the home. You only say it is for inhome use. they are not as willing to pay for the scooters. becaue the scooter is more for out door and away from home use.

that was $5,000.00 list price on my mom jazzy power chair. I think most wheelchair and medical supply can help you find what your mom needs and can operate just go try some out or someplace will bring severl gdifferent ones out to your home to try out .
The power chairs are very heavy like 300 lbs and you will need a lift or ramp to get it into and out of the car or a carrier on the back of your car.
