Hello all. I had my right leg amputated due to a congenital birth deformity and over the past MANY years.... I won't say how many as it will indicate how old I really am :).

The sensations I am experiencing are excruciating at times and then very mild and laughable. Sometimes it is the sensation of somone lightly stroking te outer side of my missing foot and other times it is like someone tracing my missing foot with a cattle prod! Why? Will this ever go away or at least decrease to a manageable level?

I am still on vicodin and lyrica .... shouldn'yt I be off the pain meds by now?

" Hi Monica, I understand where you are coming from - I had my left leg amputated about a year ago and the doctors put me on very high doses of methadone and diladid (110mg methadone and 8mg 3x a day diladid); I've been on these doses for the whole time and I'm worried I'm physically addicted now. About twice a month I have terrible pain "attacks" in the back of my stump, and phantom pain, in what used to be, my foot area. The pain medicine does nothing since this is nerve pain, so I don't know why I'm even on anything other than nerve medicine - but I feel I'm :stuck: now, and have to taper off this stuff slowly - as even missing a dose makes me feel very uneasy (withdrawals). :/ "

" Hey, Justme70, that sounds like a whole lot of pain meds, even by my standards, and those are rather high! I see a pain clinic specialist, who monitors me rather carefully, and also has me on neuropathic meds as well, but I am not nearly on as much dilauded as you are ( I wasn't ever, even immediately after surgery!!). Perhaps you could ask whoever is prescribing you all of these to refer you to a pain clinic, and they could properly handle your phantom pain and taper you off some of these narcotics! Just an idea.... Remember, there is a difference between chemical dependency and addiction; a diabetic is chemically dependent on insulin, as a pain patient is chemically dependent on their pain medication. Both would suffer withdrawal like symptoms and adverse reactions to coming off of those drugs too quickly. Addiction includes psychological issues as well: hoarding, misusing, buying illegally, taking with alcohol or other drugs to get a "high" etc.
Good luck to you, and let us know what happens. "

" Ok if at all, has anyone tried any alternative medicine for the pain?
Or any other methods of treatment such as physical therapy, accupressure?
Thanks
Vikram "
