Hello all. I had my right leg amputated due to a congenital birth deformity and over the past MANY years.... I won't say how many as it will indicate how old I really am :).

The sensations I am experiencing are excruciating at times and then very mild and laughable. Sometimes it is the sensation of somone lightly stroking te outer side of my missing foot and other times it is like someone tracing my missing foot with a cattle prod! Why? Will this ever go away or at least decrease to a manageable level?

I am still on vicodin and lyrica .... shouldn'yt I be off the pain meds by now?

" Hang in there they will get better as time goes by. I was Oxtcotin for 2 months after the ampution then got ween off that took about a month. During the first two months Phamtom the oxy didn't touch them. Its just your nevers healing and lyria does help a little with them but it take time for your nevers to heal. I have been an amputee to for two years now and I still get some weird sensation but they are not as bad as the first few months, so as time goes by it will get better

" It will get better. I'm an amp for almost a year now. At first the pain was all day everyday then it would be on and off. soon i would get random phantom pains and have trouble at night, toward the end of the day when you're settling down you feel it the most. Stick with the Lyrica and as far as other pain killers, I didn't act right on vicodin or percacet. oxycodone or cotin worked best for me. "

" Monica - I take Lyrica for phanton sensations - tingling int he missing limb. I don't have phantom pain very often - maybe once a month and it goes away so I don't take anything. We are all different. To the best of my knowledge and 30 years experience as an amputee, there is no cure for any of this. The only choice is accept it, endure or take meds. And Meds are not always the answer as drugs like Vicodin are very addictive to some. Good luck - sorry, no easy answer here. "

" Thanks for all the replies...I am now only taking the vicodin in the evenings or when the pain gets really bad. The Lyrica seems to do the trick with the burning tingles and I can tough out the rest. I am so glad I found this site. YOu are all an imense help for me!!! "

" Hi Monica, I had my bka done on May 6th. I hate it, but I am aclimating myself. My phantom pain was very bad until a couple of weeks ago. My doctor put me on neurontin because I couldn't afford the lyrica. It has worked very well. I'm off the lortab now and doing much better. I want to get off the neurontin, but I'm afraid the pain will come back. I'm going to try to wean myself off. "

" Hi Monica,
I am as of today a 2 week BKA myself. I wouldn't even think of being off pain meds or neuro meds by now! Granted, I had an Ertl done, and they take longer to heal than a regular guillotine amputation, since we have to grow bone and that is painful. And my dog keeps jumping on it.
I think that you will not like it when/if you stop taking Lyrica. I have been on Topamax and neurontin for years now, and had to go off of the topamax once. it was horrible, the neurological pain I was in.
Hope you are doing well! "

" Monica - what dose are you taking for Lyrica - just curious to see how it compares with my experience. I do find that lyrica takes care of about 90% of our problems. I do think it does get better over time. But we are all different. I think the advice to get off the oxy and vicodin is good. Once you get addicted to that stuff - it never gets better. It only gets worse.

" Skiking...I take the lyrica 3 times a day and I'm don to 1/2 doses of the vicodin...1 in the morning and 1 beforre bed... .I'm sure it's the nerves and the incision healing but the scabbing just doesnt want to heal up...it looks like when it does, I will have a divit there....:( I'm worried I will have trouble wearing my beautiful new leg!
