My daughter was 6 and in first grade when I lost my leg during the late spring. That summer, while waiting to heal and to get fitted for my first prosthetic, I was experiencing a lot of phantom pains, sometimes the worst ones were the itching sensations on the ankle and arch of my "foot". My daughter would come over to me in my LazyBoy and make scratching motions in the air where my foot would have been, and would ask me "Daddy, does that felt better?".

My kids grew up with my being an amputee. They never really made much of a mentoin about it. They learned early on they could outrun me, but I was the one who got them to everything they did or wanted to do. I guess kids can be the ultimate in non judgemental behavior.

Hey All
Some good post here...very funny. First story. When I go to bed I just leave my leg on the floor beside the bed. One morning my wife got up, and when walking by the bed , tripped on my leg. This made her mad. So she hid my leg. When I woke up and was looking for my leg , she said...I hid it, stop leaveing it laying on the floor for me to trip over! I had to search the house to find my leg. My son, When he was about 3 yrs old use to put his leg in my socket and try to walk on it, he would also hop around the house like dad.. My son does not understand when other people stare at me. To him it is totaly normal that I have one leg, as its been that way his whole life. Some of his friends ask him questions . My son does not get what the big deal is...so what...ya my dad has one leg...its kind of cool, in some ways hes more at home with it then I am... Stay Frosty all...and keep the funnies comming Frosty

I haven't had my amputation yet, but I've worn a brace that looks like a Symes amputation for almost 9 years now, so I get the stares and the questions too. I have Disability parking tags on my vehicle, and one night I drove to another town for a concert. It was FREEZING outside, and really icy, and the carpark was a long walk from the venue. None of us wanted to have to haul our big winter coats in to the show, so I took a chance and drove up front-- low and behold, the very first place by the door was a handicapped spot! As we all shed our coats and waddled across the ice for the door, my friend Stasia shouted 'I love your gimpy legs'! That has become our "parking karma' cry ever since!

my very good friend who wears full lenght leg braces on both legs and walks with crutches has a son. His son's clue to do what dad had told him to do was when he heard dad click the knee locks on his braces so he could walk. The boy learn fast that if dad wanted to he could move pretty fast with the knee locked into place and daddy had had very big srong hands and arms and had very good aim when it came to spanking time. He learnd to be a very good boy.
Also my son can not walk and used a wheel chair. I broke my leg and could not walk very good with crutches and one leg it was very hard for a big fat lady like me to get up using one leg. so one day i ask my son to bring me a glass of ice tea or something. and he laughed and said now you know how I feel. He was about 20 years old. and I said back to him and now you know how I feel so go get my glass of tea. He laugh and said well mom it''s like the blind leading the handicapped. We both laughed and I did get my glass of tea with a smile too.
