" Could you add a little more detail? Pain following surgery should be short term - few days. Phantom pain - sharp really painful at times - can go away or may be with you for some time. Phantom sensation - for me, its a lifetime thing. Anyhow, a little more detail will help us respond to your question/thanks/john "

" Look into a condition called CRPS or RSD (different names for the same thing) Those initials stand for Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy or Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome.

I have had this condition since a motorcycle accident 17.5 years ago. It is horrible, and is listed as the worst pain on the McGill pain index (as causalgia, the name given it in the 1860's). Even worse that amputation pain, or phantom pain. "

" I can only go based on my own experience which is phantom pain. If the pain your are describing is originating in the brain, (as opposed to physical pain from the injury), it is possible a drug like Lyrica might help you. But it won't help if that pain is from the extreme injury you suffered. I think edalji's advice is more appropriate to what you have described for us. Good luck and keep at it. Don't give up. Lots of Docs out there and none of them know it all.
