How do you know what TYPE of amnesia you've got? From stuff I've read...I'm so confused as I seem to have more than one type going on here and I'm sure that can't be possible! All my doc says is amnesia. And does what type you have make any difference to how it's treated etc.?

" Retro-grade amnesia is the loss of memory before whatever traumatic event caused the loss to begin with. Basically, this is all your long-term memories like your childhood. This form of amnesia can also lead to Antegrade-amnesia as a side-effect, which focuses on your more recent memories like the things you did yesterday or even a few hours ago. Both of these types of amnesia are treated in the same way, which is to say they aren't really treated at all. Doctors can treat the sypmptoms like depression, but the memory loss itself, well, they just don't know enough about it to really help. If there is anything else you would like to know just ask. Two decades of both temporary and long-term amnesia is probably the closest thing you will find to an expert. Our condition is rare. "

" my doc says that it's different depending on cause. like, psychotherapy and hypnosis might help if it's psychological, but there's not a lot they can do for brain damage. He says all I can do is "wait and see what happens" "

" Oh God! I do not know whether I am more relieved to have found Bremius' post knowing now, whatever was happening to my mind has a name and is not something unheard of or more terrified that that something is amnesia! But thanks all the same, Bremius :-) "
