At my last visit with my pulmonologist he said to me at the end of the visit "Oh by the way, one of the results of your of your blood tests show that you are a carrier for Alpha1 deficiency."

I was a little taken back by this because I had never heard of it before. He just said not to worry but that I could pass it on. He said it had nothing to do with my asthma.

Of course telling me off handedly not to worry and nothing more was very frustrating to me. I since heve searched the internet and found a lot of info.
It just bothered me that he did not tell me more.(I still don't know my type. I guess I must be MS since the office also said don't worry about it when I called to ask.)Sorry for venting.

" I had a similar situation about 11 years ago. As a side note to the rest of my tests results, the doc told me I had Alpha-1. She told me not to smoke and I would be fine. well, she didn't make a deal about it so I didn't worry about it. Last year I was in the hospital with extremely high liver levels. Since then, a lot of my recent health problems have all stemmed back to Alpha-1. If I were you, I would try to find a pulmonologist who is familiar with Alpha-1 and get more info. about your situation. Best of luck to you. "

" Hi Tom! If I were you I would be mad as an old wet hen at your pulmonologist. He should have taken time to explain everything to you. I would make another appt. with him and demand explanations and answers to ALL your questions. By telling you you could pass it on means that any children you have could have Alpha1 or also be a carrier. I cannot believe he shrugged it off so lightly. I wish the best for you. Hugs~
