When I was in my senior year of high of high school I worked, went to school, ran 10 miles a day,and strength trained 6 times a week.I was introduced to crystal meth. that year.It seemed like such a life to my busy life.I quit school only needing 3 classes to graduate.
I was married at 19 and divorced at 21.At 26 I over dosed and opened my eyes.I had a friend take to his mother-in-laws house and kept me there for two weeks. I never touched meth again.
I began to put on weight almost as soon as I was clean.I was married in 2004 at the weight of 525 lbs. I had a lap band in Feb.2005. IT became infected by an unusual bacterial infection. I had pockets of fluid starting to build up on my chest and stomach. They had to be cut and drained. One on my chest was 4 inches long and after it was cut I could see my sternum. The band had to be removed.
I was in the hospital about 120 days in 2005. The cutting and draining of my wounds continued. No doctor in the area in which I live could figure out what the bacteria was. Finally in late 2005 I was sent to an infectious disease doctor and he discovered what the bacteria was. So after being cut and drained over 25 times and, having to pack and unpack my wounds twice a day for about 10 mounts I had an answer.I began a specific treatment of 3 antibiotic a day, Twice a day. One of the antibiotics gave me neuropathy in both legs and I still can not feel from my knees down.I was finally given a clean bill of health.
Two weeks later my gastric. doctor called my in and told me I was in the end stages of cirrhosis of the liver.I was tested further and discovered I had a rare genetic disorder called Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.I was told I needed a transplant for my liver. There was only one problem. They would not even put me on the transplant list until my weight was down to between 240 and 250lbs.
I am scheduled for another lap band on Sept.4,2008.I have three surgeries ahead of me the lap-band, liver transplant, and removal of skin after weight loss.I am at 380 lbs. now and must lose at least 130lbs. After that I will be on the liver transplant list for who knows how long.It just feels like the clock is ticking towards the end of my life.
Thanks to everyone at Daily Strength for reading my story, and thing of me even if for a few minutes.

Hi, I am waiting to get approved by insurance to get lapband done. This is my last alternative. I had a MS attack and my legs are very painful so exercising is very hard for me. So, my doctor and I talked about lapband and I went for it. Do you think I am wrong, I weight 300 pounds and I am disguissed in myself. I read with all your problems was that due to the lapband???

Oh gosh, that was a lot to go thru. I take it that you dropped from 525 to 380 during the bacteria invasion? Sure hope all goes well and you don't have to go thru that again. May you get on that transplant list a.s.a.p.!

Hey Gene... wow.. you've been through a lot. Instead of surgery have you looked into a medical wieght management program. I am on one. The weight comes of quickly like a gastric, however safer and you change your life and eating habits. I am on it.. its low calorie and you drink liquid medical shakes. I am sorry about all your medical issues, but I guess it just makes you stronger that you made it thru all that. If you go thru with the surgery I hope all goes well. let us know how it turns out !!! best of luck
