he's (the author) an addict in recovery who knows all addiction biographies are filled with nonsense because how does anyone--especially in a black-out or worse remember these things. plus we tend to embellish (i.e. lie). so he goes back and finds his entire story from anyone who he crossed paths with during those years. it was a fascinating book because what he thought had happened had not and what he thought he did he did not. i also like the book because it takes him more than a few tries to get this thing. excellent journalist.
