"The alcoholic is like a tornado roaring his way through the lives of
others. Hearts are broken. Sweet relationships are dead. Affections have been uprooted. Selfish and inconsiderate habits have kept the home in turmoil. We feel a man is unthinking when he says that sobriety is enough" ~Alcoholics Anonymous, 4th Edition, Into Action, pg. 82~ Posted on 11/08/09, 12:11 pm |

Yes, that passage has always somewhat mystified me. I think of "first things first" and feel that taken out of context from the BB it means little or is off the mark.
If a person who is new to sobriety or never experienced it in life thinks that sobriety may be enough, then I would say for that person to go for that bit of sanity first and the tornado winds will slow enough for introspection perhaps afterward.

THis is a good passage for someone who is newly sober and wonders why people are still not accepting them or gleefully embracing the "new sober them".....we caused hell for people, pure hell. Stopping drinking is the first step in fixing this damage. And sometimes this storm we created made damage that is unfixable-and that is hard for many of us to accept.

"Can you relate???" I thought this was another thread about West Virginian kin folks.
Look at the number one entry in this definition: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dic... To most "long-timers" (old-timers?), SOBER means more of a state of mind, but in common usage, SOBER meant "free from alcoholic influence." The Big Book dictionary is a very good investment!

Good reminder G. Understanding that drinking wasn't the issue I am better equipped to understand the demands of change when it comes to Steps, 6 and 7. Thank HP for the forgiveness of self and others through Step 10.
Without an understanding of the fact that unless there is change, guess what, that tornado has offspring!!! lol

Mark, So true. Grateful to find out early on alcohol was only a symptom of my disease.
