Hi, I'm new to this, as for so long I just thought I was a "binge drinker" its only come to my attention that I'm actually an alcoholic. I'm 29 and have had issues with my drinking since I started 15years ago - long time of hangovers, guilt, shame and blackouts. I hate that I don't have the will power to just stop - I hate that this thing controls me. So I've been seeing a therapist for a few months, I have only met my goals twice in that time.. I really want tokick this so what else can I do.. Do AA meetings work? Meds? My whole social circle drinks and thinks I'm fine.. I know I'm not and feel there is a whole new world available to me.. I stopped drinking during both pregnancies - but obviously I can't keep getting pregnant to stpo me drinking... Anyway hoping someone can shed some light, I seem to be lacking in the support area. Thanks

" I know what you mean about breaking the cycle, not letting it fall on to your kids. One of my biggest fears/guilts.

I'm trying like hell to make that change NOW.

I too tried willpower. Never lasted long for me though. I encourage you to try getting to a meeting, and try to have an open mind. There are several ways. I hope you find one.

PEACE "

" Hi Sunflower.

It sounds like you got it bad ... I can relate to what you are saying.

I sought help in AA and that has worked for me when I really gave it a try. You don't have to be an alcoholic to attend AA meetings ... anyone who thinks they might have a problem with alcohol is welcome.

I hope you find some comfort and understand that you are not alone. "

" Welcome to the group Sunflower. I found wonderful support at AA. The people there understood what I was going through and were alongside me every step of the way. Stick around and see what's helped others. We're all at different stages of sobriety, but we're all leaning on each other. :} "

" Welcome there are some very intelligent and mature posts here. Will Power is a difficult thing for people with addictions it doesnt really work, WILLINGNESS is a great start and you sound as if you are getting there. Meetings in AA saved me from myself, and work
even now, good luck. "

" my experience is the people who were sober more than a year in my AA group when I came in are either still sober 27yrs later, or died sober. it's exciting to us to see someone come in and follow our path. those who want to put a a few months or years together, or are unwilling to do much are common and of no interest.

none of the members I mentioned were on medications. but to be fair, that was before the docs were tossing scripts around right and left for feeling poorly. almost all newcomers feel really bad.

what they were doing and are continuing to get good results from are some actions suggested in AA. check it out, but if you're not willing to do much it's a waste of everyone's time. "
