I love Friday night at the ole AA group. Starting around 715PM get to hold up with those who arrived early for the 8PM meeting. By the time 8PM arrived there is probably 25-35 members outside drinking down coffee, smoking cigarettes, sounds of laughter ringing through the groups of cliques (Cliques, referring to the time of recovery each has and how most seem to group up in sharing basically the same reality . There are probably three to four of these groupings going on at the same time.)
Newcomers don't stand a chance around our home group. they get welcomed, smothered with howdy doodies and a genuine sense of "about time you showed up, we've been waiting for you!"

During the meeting there seems to be a sense of personal involvement and newcomers drinking that AA coffee are surely wired up!

the message of AA has many faces and it comes from the hearts of those who have found something that seems to work, yet only by coming to meetings can possibly gain continued understanding and a different outlook to life without drinking. The power for me in the beginning, the members and the meetings of AA. No doubt!

Friday nights 8PM meeting snowballs the attendance outside to about 40 on an average, the 1030PM is soon beginning and there are still those from the 8PM, myself included.

Friday nights are the bowling and pool shooting activities as well, many return for the 1030 PM meeting.

This group of mine which has been my home group for over 18 years has continued this kind of member associations since it started in 1990. We understand the importance of working with others and just like here on DS, can only give when those who suffer are willing to receive.

So I would like to here about the Home Group Advantage, how personal associations gained in the rooms can be transmitted to this group without having that face to face which to me is a handicap? How does one transfer the gratitude of personal excitement of recovery to those who have yet to experience this?
Tough questions for me to answer much less others who understand my point.

" sounds like a great group. sure miss mine.

it was started in '73 by my sponsor and his wife, both about age 25 at the time and both still sober today. at that time other groups locally were plug in the juggers, so they travelled 8hrs to attend a solid group around South Bay, and brought their format and methods of doing AA to ours.

we're oriented around sponsorship, steps, and service...meaning we take care of teleservice and the tasks other groups pass on.

we put on a yearly mountain convention, and meetup as a group at 2 other conventions in Palm Springs and the coast. there are group parties for New Years, 'smas, 4th of July, superbowl, and Halloween. Members take panels to prisons, and host local marathon meetings for lone wolves around the holiday times.

we're a bit over half female to men ratio, and all have sponsors in the group.

our group has the reputation of being way too strong in it's approach, and the members in the weaker groups poke a little fun...and then quietly send their family members and friends they care about over to our meetings to get sober.

might be going back to CA over the holidays and part of that joy is getting to see my good friends, but we are together in the fellowship of the spirit, and so never far apart. "
