Had my first real hurdle and cleared it

I woke up this morning feeling good and actually smiled a few times reading some comments people left for me here. I left for work listening to my favorite morning talk show that ended at 10am. I started working and it out of no where I had this sudden urge/craving for a beer. I began to panic and the anxiety started flowing over me. The only thing I could think to do was keep repeating ITS NOT AN OPTION over and over. I did this for about ten minutes and the anxiety began to lift a little. I kept thinking of all the things I had just went through only 5 days ago and what would happen if I had that first sip. I started to feel a little more normal, but still had a craving. Its amazing how the mind will trick you to the point of making you feel out of control. I finally just started to draw on a piece of scrap paper to take my mind off the whole thing. After about 30 min. I was ok and resumed my workday. I'm not sure if it was a panic attack that made me want alcohol or the want for alcohol causing a panic attack. Either way I made it through it and I do believe its b/c I found this site. So thank you to all that has supported me and all the other who I have read about. One more day down

" Congratulations! You made it through so when the next time it happens you will know that you don't have to act on the feeling and it will eventually pass. I am proud of you!! "

" great you made it another day sober.

not a good idea to rely on this site to affect anyone's alcoholism for long...as an answer it's insufficient to the task.

what are you doing to make this run at sobriety different from all your past ones? anything? "

" Well congrats on overcoming. As your body goes thru withdrawals and chemical changes - you never know when these attacks will come - just stay strong - and remember - you DONT have to react to a craving.

Peace! "

" Hurdle, you say? What's a hurdle? I started yesterday morning and today as I do all mornings in sobriety, with a cup of coffee and a few minutes of prayer and refection, and I'll be at an AA meeting in a few hours.

Craving for a beer, you say? What's a craving for a beer? I haven't had one of those since just after Ronald Reagan left the White House. "

" That's Nemo's way of showing that it does get easier with time. Do what he did and you'll get there too. :) He's been sober since Jesus was a boy. "

" remember: it's easier to STAY sober than to GET sober so when you build yourself a bit of time buy yourself insurance by doing whatever necessary to stay that way. this site is good but you may want to go further. in any case congrats on your success today. waiting out an urge works because you find if you can wait out a minute you can wait out an hour and if you wait out the hour than waiting out the day becomes not only possible but a done deal.
