Meds Really Can Help

Hi,
I've been on this board for a few weeks. Have been taking Campral and Naltrexone daily for almost a month now. Everything finally came together for me a week or so ago. At the same time I stopped sugar, alcohol, red meat and wheat and immediately felt better. I've tried many times this year to quit drinking and kept failing. The meds have really, really helped. They clear your head and remove the mental anguish over having that first drink. But for me the cravings are so strong, I decided the only long term solution for me is to quit the sugar too. Alot of people will not agree with this but it is what works for me. Red meat makes me crave wine, which makes me crave chocolate, which makes me want more wine and the cycle continues. I am posting this to share what is currently working with me. I also wanted to shared that it has taken a month of daily Campral and Naltrexone before I am finally seeing the true benefits of these meds. And, I was drinking at least once or twice a week during the past month. I drank last night - 2 beers and a glass of wine. I do want to quit and am working towards that goal. I guess my point is the meds really help. I caved and drank last night because I didn't want to be different. But, I didn't know about any meds to help treat alcoholism until I finally confided in my doctor that I wanted to quit. However, I have to take 100 mg or more of Naltrexone daily to get the full effect - turns out that most women only benefit at 100 mg or higher doses of Naltrexone. (I am a woman age 45) I am working toward quitting completely. But physical and mental cravings are now gone which is a huge relief. I drank last night because I was on a date and didn't want to sit in a bar and not drink. But, I can now work through that part of quitting without the strong cravings thanks to the meds. I am now able to address other areas of this addition. If you are doing this without any medical support - consider asking your doctor for the meds that have been shown to help. They take away the cravings and allow you to make conscious decisions - not continually giving in to the raw cravings of an addiction. Twinkle45 Posted on 11/05/09, 10:11 am |

glad they are helping you.
do you understand just what are they altering in your mind that makes not drinking for several weeks bearable? just wondering if your medical professional went over why this is so very comfortable?

I'm happy for you Twinkle. It's possible you had an allergy to one of those foods which cutting out made you feel better. I took Campral when I went into a program. It worked amazing the first 3 months, but it looses it's potency, so be prepared. I wasn't prepared. It's amazing what modern medicine can do. I wish you the best!

Cabledude,
I think the Campral heals the parts of your brain that alcohol trys to destroy - it rewires the brain back to the way it was before we began drinking. The Naltrexone really helps with the cravings. But, I have not stopped drinking completely which I now have to face. Just wanted to let others know not to be afraid of seeking out their docs and trying these new meds as they really can help calm that raging voice in one's head for another drink, then another...etc.

Campral reduces the craving for alcohol. It does take at least 3 weeks to have an effect. I am on it and it does work.
