I'm having a rough rough time in recovery. I get sooooo many different opinions from people about the issue of depression, especially from people in my a.a. Many people are telling me that it's a period for spiritual growth and continue to work the program. Dr. is telling me I have clincal depression and should treat it. I've been working the program for a few months and have gotten through many of the steps but I literally feel like death every single moment of everyday, haven't slept in months, low appetite, just physically and mentally broke. I believe in the concept of a higher power restoring me back to sanity through a spritual experience but when do you draw the line and treat the severe depression as what it is? It runs in my family w/ my father and older brother and I've also had episodes in the past but nothing of this magnitude. I'm sure people have just ended it being in a rut as long as this nearly a year now. I really think I need to take some action and get treatment but I almost feel like some of the ppl are considering me weak but I guess no one really can know how I feel except myself. I don't know I guess I'm just drained and I think I should really get some medical attention. Any advice would be appreciated.

Tradition 10 in AA is that AA's are to have no opinion on outside issues. That means that people in your AA group should not be lecturing or giving you their opinion on medical issues.

I'd agree with many others here - listen to the doctor. If the doctor wants to try some medication, then follow the advice but do your own follow-up research regarding side effects so that you know what you're dealing with.
Anti-depressants can work, but you sometimes have to try several or adjust dosage before you find the correct balance. You can do this by understanding the potential side effects in advance, and then discussing it with your doctor as you start taking them.
