Hypocrisy

I like to drink my fair share of alcohol, and I am surrounded by some people who like to attack my "bad habit"...all the while they overeat (ice cream, candy, fast food etc) or overindulge in another bad habit (too much sex, work, cigarettes, etc...).

I for one am tired of hypocrites trying to knock me down for drinking "too much" while these same people overindulge in their own, more currently acceptable habit!!!

Americans can eat themselves to death practically without anyone turning a head, but the second one drinks "in excess," is the point one is demonized!!!

Our values are in disarray! Americans are "okay" if they are 5'10" 300 pounds but NOT okay if they drink more than the average person!

Someone please help me... I'm not asking for answers, but I am pointing out the unfair judgments!

Nobody here is perfect! So, stop the judgments! Live and let let! We all die eventually due to one thing or another! Only fate will decide how...all those you interfere try to play god while being so far from it...

" I'm not dealing with all the issues you are, but I never knew peaceful sleep until I quit drinking. I thought I was sleeping well when I was passed out and could not be woken but now I know different. It took weeks but sleep is so much different now and so much better. "

" drafter, I understand for those with peace and quiet it's easier to sleep. Imagine a steady deep bass note playing out of a subwoofer that you can't shut off. That's what it's like for me to try to fall asleep. Being sober seems to make the problem louder. It just drives you mad. Here is a link to an article the BBC wrote. Maybe if you hear another person's similar experience, you will believe me.

Not only do I hear this noise, but I've felt my head and limbs vibrating or shaking at times. It's like I'm being affected by some unknown force. It is bizarre, and I've never experienced such things nor can I explain them.

Link to BBC article (and video that features the Hum noise itself)...

" Wow not many discussions get 74 posts so that attracted my attention right away. You are quite the instigator number.
I used to think similair to you about AA in that I figured it was a bunch of whiners obsessing about alcohol living in AA like a crutch cause they couldn't handle the realities of life, kinda like jehovah's witnesses.
Not until I no longer wanted to live another moment but was not prepared to die due to responsiblity and obligation was I motivated to approach AA with an open mind.
I was surprized to find that there is a lot more involved in AA than bad mouthing alcohol. Really, I didn't hear anyone bad mouth alcohol they did bad mouth their ability to control it tho. It became clear that there was a program invovled a rather complex spiritual endeavor to change the way you think and act. Turning your will and life over to a higher power of your understanding. Well, what the hell could that be all about eh? Yet somehow 2 million people worldwide are supporting each other and overcoming an historically hopeless addiction - alcohol and how many more are using the same principles to overcome a wide variety of other addictions? What is an addiction but an insatiable hunger? Well, you do seem ravenous for something more than you have despite your brilliance and introspection. Have you read the big book? Can you open your mind enough to explore ideas that baffle you just based on the hunch that brings you to this forum?

I notice you do not answer many questions.
You cannot explain yourself to be understood.

Do not weep; do not wax indignant. Understand.

" tam,

Yes. I have read it. Of course that isn't enough. You have to read it until the words that come out of your mouth are basically nothing but quotes from it, etc. Sounds like brainwashing to me, and I'm not interested in losing my originality.

As far as asking me to see a doctor for the Hum, that would do no good. They would only tell me that I have oversensitive hearing. I have already explained that it only happens indoors at my house. What more is there to understand that it is nothing to do with my ears?

Sometimes you have to experience things first hand to believe in them...much like you people say some mysterious higher power helps you overcome your alcohol addictions.

Things are much more complicated for me. I could stop drinking and still be left with a myriad of other issues that would drive most people to do "crazy" things too...then I'm back at square one. Most of you out there can eliminate the alcohol for a while enough to gain back your sanity, while here I am with diagnoses left and right "bipolar this" "borderline that" "self-injury this" "paranoid delusions"...I mean, it's enough to drive anyone to something that makes them forget it all for a while long enough to get a break. Everyone has a breaking point or threshold.

I believe everyone here does the best they can with what they have, and I am the same. "

" Perception my friend, perception.

Alcoholics truly understand the disease of addiction and addiction comes in many forms - it what one chooses to use to feed that addiction -

Sounds to me like when someone face to face points out your flaws - you could possibly point out there.

Anything in excess is not good -

i don't think people are judging you - you are taking that personally - this group is designed to help people who WANT TO STOP DRINKING - it's not really designed for those who want to control their drinking, moderately drink, pop in and say he guess what I only had 5 beers instead 12 -

You are an active user - even though some of the people may fall off the wagon - everyone's main goal here is to stop drinking and stay not drinking - That doesn't appear to be your goal -

Nobody in this group claims perfection - people's words do not necessarily mean they are judgmental - you, as a reader of posts or responses are solely responsible for the way you perceive it - if you perceive at judgmental then so be it - if you say as encouragement then so be it -

I know many people who can pull a good drunk but it doesn't mean they are an alcoholic, Americans are a group of unheathly eaters -

But as we all know - when you point a finger at someone you have 3 pointing back at you - that's common sense - if an obese person is giving you advice on alcoholism, that is because you are in the room seeking advice - if a gambler gives you advice in an alcoholism room that is because you are seeking the advice - we addicts - don't deny that we are addicts adn many of don't deny that change our addictions from one thing to another -

Sounds to me like you don't care to hear how the cow at the cabbage - if you don't want to hear it don't venture into the pasture - it's as simple as that.

Peace! "
