What is a "sober club?"

I'm new to this support group and fairly new to AA (less than 1 year). I was browsing the posts on the discussion of what to do for the 4th of July, and saw the term "sober club." I've heard of sober dances, but not sober clubs. Is this common in certain parts of the U.S. (I'm from R.I.).

I don't want to start any arguments for/against AA. However, wouldn't it be a good idea if another organisation or simply a group of individuals set up some form of sober club. Religion isn't as strong here in the UK and i know that it can deter many recovering alcoholics from joining AA.

I love meeting other alcoholics in recovery - whatever their method of staying sober, so yes, I would come along.
